HOWARD KENNEDY, commander of the
One Eighth Air Force club reported on the
the club’s Scale Fly-in that took place
October 28-29 at Superstition Airpark in
Mesa, Arizona, home of the Arizona Model
Aviators.
“Activities started Friday evening with a
hospitality hour for the early arrivals and setup
crew. The menu included pizza, wings,
and liquid refreshment.
“Saturday was breezy but flyable. At noon
we lined the airplanes on the runway
centerline for the public to get a closer look at
the Scale models. As soon as the aircraft were
cleared from the runway, we launched three
trainer aircraft with buddy boxes for anyone
who wanted to try RC flying—mostly for the
kids.
“Sunday’s weather was much nicer with
no wind, overcast, and ideal temperatures.
There were several airplanes in the air at all
times. The semiannual event drew 71
registered pilots and more than 100 nice
Scale aircraft. We held our raffle Sunday
afternoon and gave away roughly $2,000
worth of donated merchandise. Following the
raffle we held an awards presentation for the
winners in the various event categories.
“At each fly-in we do a Young Eagles
award. The winners for this event were Ren
Solomon from California and Alexander
Vidales of Phoenix, Arizona. The pictures of
the Young Eagles receiving their awards
were provided by Val Roquini of Phoenix.
“The complete award list and more
pictures of the event can be viewed on our
Web site at www.oneeighthairforce.org.”
The Kona R/C Flyers meet each Thursday
and Sunday at what West Hawaii residents
call Old Airport. At the end of the mile-long
abandoned runway, a new 50 x 300-foot
runway was paved.
The $11,000 price tag was covered by
club donations, a paving company was
hired, and the new runway was ready for
action in mid 2005. The club has more than
40 members, up from only a handful 25
years ago.
