AMA DISTRICT X congratulates the
Maui RC Modelers (MRCM) on achieving
AMA Gold Leader Club status. Wayne
Hamada, associate vice president, and
MRCM club president Eric Chase provided
the following report on the Maui RC
Modelers 2007 Air Show and Leader Club
award presentation:
“The Maui RC Modelers’ 2007 Air
Show was held February 24, 2007, at the
Puunene Model Flying Field on the Island
of Maui. More than 1,000 spectators were
treated to a wide variety of aeromodeling
demonstrations under blue skies and gentle
breezes.
“The record attendance was attributed to
the exceptional support by the local media.
KITV, the local affiliate of ABC TV,
regarded the MRCM Air Show as one of
four top weekend getaways in the State of
Hawaii! Public service announcements and
live interviews with Eric Chase were also
produced by local radio stations well in
advance of the event.
“A host of model aircraft
demonstrations were conducted including a
T-34 Pylon race and turbine-powered F-16s
and F-86s piloted by Duke Chung and Bill
DeRego. A World War II formation flight
was flown by the father-and-son team of
Duke and Owen Baldwin.
“Todd Davies, Steve Groff, and 13-
year-old Alex Chapple flew electric Scale
models while 14-year-old Tyler Patrou,
Dave Mahan, and Rusty and Cookie
Medeiros thrilled the crowd with their
dazzling aerobatic exhibitions.
“Other events included a full-scale
helicopter fire-fighting demonstration
provided by Windward Aviation and a
candy drop for the kids performed by Terry
Nutt and Dave Cowan. A silent auction and
raffle prizes rounded out the event.
“At the conclusion of the air show,
Rich Hanson, District X vice president,
presented MRCM with the AMA Gold
Leader Club Award. MRCM joins the list
of other AMA Leader Clubs making a
difference through their youth programs
and community service.
“The overwhelming success of this
year’s event would not have been possible
without the help and support of MRCM
members and generous donations provided
by Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Carl’s Jr.,
Da Toy Store, DJ Shark in the Water,
Dolphin Galleries, Great Planes Model
Distributors, Goodyear Kahului, Maui
Aviators, Pacific Rim Joinery, Piiholo
Ranch, Roy’s Restaurant, Snap-On Tools,
Windward Aviation, and Yorman’s
Restaurant.”
Till next time ... Keep ’em safe and Keep
’em fly’n.
