January 2004 165
THIS MONTH I will start with some
material sent by Harry Newman, the
District I Associate Vice President (AVP)
from New Hampshire.
The first event was the annual Toys for
Tots campaign to obtain contributions of
toys and money to be donated to the Marines
for distribution to area children. The
Southern New Hampshire Flying Eagles R/C
Club has sponsored this event for several
years and it has been very successful.
This year Harry presented an award
from the AMA to the club for its efforts.

to club president Frank Phillips.
Left to right are the Marine representative,
Frank Phillips; contest director Mark
Versprille; and Bob LaCroix, one of the
founding members of the Flying Eagles.
Harry also sent in information about the
Concord Aero Guidance Society’s annual
Scale fun-fly. The two photos show some of
the attendees at the annual event, now to be
known as the Charlie MacLean Memorial
Fun-Fly.
This shows part of the pit area.
Above are three of the Pilot’s Choice
winners: Bob Johnson with his 1/3-scale
Fleet, Joe Marrone with his Fokker D.VIII,
and Bob Langlois with his Pitts.
Categories were World War I, World War II,
Civilian, and Best Overall.
This is a daylong affair and usually
draws from Maine, New Hampshire,
Vermont, and Massachusetts. This year’s
event was well attended with approximately
33 aircraft on hand.
The event is held on the third Sunday in
July.
I attended the State of Maine Scale Shoot
Out on August 2-3, 2003 and once again it
was a super event. Most of the information
will be provided in a future column, but
there are three pictures that I would like to
share with you because of the 100th
anniversary of powered flight in December.
This is Paul Flohn with his 1903 Wright
Flyer. The airplane was scratch-built from
plans he had obtained. It is powered with
two electric motors and appeared to be
fairly stable—probably more stable than
the original.

flight.

Wright Flyer.
I received a CD from Paul Gosselin
containing many pictures of the World
War I Dawn Patrol held at the Northern
Connecticut Radio Control Club field in
July and of the Scale Master Qualifier held
at Gardiner, Massachusetts, during July.
Unfortunately there were no captions
included. I will supply the pictures; you
supply your own captions. I will use the
photos to fill my monthly columns. Below
is the first.
This one I know! It is Gus Deltwas and his
aircraft. Is it a Tiger Moth?
