146 MODEL AVIATION
ERNIE NICKODEM, longtime associate
vice president (AVP) for western New York,
has decided to step down from this position
on May 1. A classy guy, Ernie has been the
consummate AVP. He is always there at his
club’s events and totally dependable about
sending in articles and reports.
Never asking anything for himself, Ernie
epitomized the best of what it means to be
an AMA volunteer. Ernie, the district and I
are indebted to you for everything you have
done. We are a better organization because
of your efforts!
Our District II AVPs are and will be
working with their clubs and Leader
Members to form regional chapters by the
end of the year. A chapter is a regional
flying club association where club
representatives and Leader Members meet to
discuss club events and assist and learn from
one another. They also learn about the AMA
programs that have been developed to assist
clubs to grow and improve, and about what
the AMA is doing on your behalf.
Ironically, I have heard of a few clubs
that are afraid to participate because they
don’t want to be told by AMA what to do.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. We
are there to listen, work, and assist our
clubs. If your club hasn’t yet been contacted,
please let me know. So far the club response
has been good.

AVP Dan Luchaco speaks to the Curtiss
Memorial Chapter.
The Whitman Flyers’ swap meet was held
on November 16 in Huntington, New York.
Attendance was way up from last year,
possibly because of the 50 tables provided
for vendors selling fully built models.
Modelers were on a buying frenzy. There
must have been 100 people crowded in the
aisles and it was difficult to maneuver.
There were many fully built models
going out of the door all morning. RC is
alive and well here on Long Island.

The 2009 District II Fun Fly will be held
July 18-19 at the Cattaraugus/Olean
Municipal Airport. It will feature a 2,200-
foot, manicured, grass runway shown in the
following pictures. This will also be the
Southern Tier Aero Radio Society’s
(STARS) 32nd annual rally. This is a great
venue and promises to be a fun time, so
please mark your calendar.
