or send me a letter at the address listed.
JIM UNDERWOOD sent in the following
report and photos from the Raleigh Durham
Radio Control (RDRC) club’s fun-fly, held on
April 17.
“We had 60 registered pilots, and nearly
perfect weather with a slight breeze down the
runway that gave no one an excuse not to fly.
There were all types of airplanes present from
40% aerobats to Giant Scale warbirds and
many fun-fly aircraft scattered all over. The
CD of the event was James Fowler.
“Food and drinks were available for
members and guests, and prizes were given
out throughout the event. This is one of two
AMA sanctioned fun-fly events that RDRC
has each year, and we are planning to have an
additional International Miniature Aircraft
Association (IMAA) fun-fly next year as well.
“Our club has roughly 90 members. The
field is in the middle of approximately 55
acres of overfly area with a paved runway,
as well as a parallel grass runway also. We
are very proud of our club and strive to
attract new members all the time. We have
electricity at the field for charging
equipment.
“Our club looks forward to our upcoming
events and welcome all visitors who want to
come out and participate.”
A south view of the flightline shows some
of the large-scale airplanes.
Club member George Abbott kneels
behind with his Giant Scale Sopwith Pup.
Club members Jim Underwood and Billy
Hinton are doing buddy-box duty at the
event.
Robert Vess is getting ready to fly his 1/3-
scale Extra.
This next report was furnished by Dave
Hostetter, public relations coordinator for
the Fredrick Model Aircraft Club.
“Scouts from the surrounding
communities converged on the East Alco
Recreation Site on April 24, 2004, in
Frederick, Maryland, for their annual
Webelos Bridging Day (WE’ll BE LOyal
Scouts). This is a day when the Boy Scouts
troops help indoctrinate the Webelos in
preparation for the transition into Boy Scouts.
“The day consisted of fire building, the
use of an axe knife, map and compass use,
using a zip line, camping, and cooking. As an
additional event, the Frederick Model
Aircraft Club gave presentations explaining
the history and physics of flight. The Scouts
had the chance to fly some of our members’
trainers on a buddy-box system with some of
our instructors. The hope is that this
experience will go toward their aviation merit
badge requirements.
“The high winds delayed the start of the
training flights until after lunch but all of the
Scouts were very enthusiastic with flying the
airplanes. Some even got back into the line to
fly again.
“Frederick Model Aircraft Club is
searching for a suitable flying site in the
Frederick County area due to the recent loss
of its field of many years because of
industrial development.”
After high winds delayed the start of flight
training in the morning, the afternoon
proved much better as the Scouts lined up
waiting for a turn to fly with the Frederick
Model Aircraft Club instructors.
The Scouts shown here are getting a brief
history lesson about flying from one of
the members of the Frederick Model
Aircraft Club while two others members
wait for their turn to explain the physics of
flight using demonstration models.
The morning started early as the Webelo
Scouts prepare for a full day of excitement
as they prepare for their transition into the
Boy Scouts.
Go take a kid flying.
