174 MODEL AVIATION
IN JANUARY I attended the AMA
Convention in Ontario, California. The event
is growing and attendance and interest was up
again this year.
While at the event, I was able to meet
with many District V members who were at
the convention. I am looking forward to
seeing more members at the annual
Southeastern Modelers Show in Perry,
Georgia, in a few weeks!
Associate Vice President Bob Dixon offered
a couple of event reports. The Flint Flyers
Fly-In was held November 10, 2007, at the
Georgia State Veterans Park outside of
Cordele, Georgia. This is a nice flying site
and the park area is one of the best-kept
secrets in middle Georgia.
On top of having an RC club with a huge
runway, the site touches Lake Blackshear.
The park has a beautifully groomed golf
course, a camping ground, and a small
museum of vintage aircraft. At this park you
can fish, golf, camp, and fly RC all in the
same weekend.
The Flint Flyers are very active and their
current president is Jerry Johnson who has
been modeling for more than 25 years. The
club welcomes visitors and runs a nice fly-in.

One of the beautiful vintage airplanes.
Warbirds Over Fort Valley, Georgia was
cosponsored by the Georgia Aircraft
Modelers Association (GAMA) and the Giant
Scale Warbirds Association December 14-15,
2007. The weather turned the tables on us for
this show, especially on Saturday when the
sky peeled open.
Pilots arrived on Friday for this two-day
event that was scheduled for Friday and
Saturday. Friday was pretty nice, but by
11:30 on Saturday everyone had to pack it up
and go home because the rain wouldn’t stop.
Mac Hodges couldn’t even get the B-29
put together for the Saturday show.
Regardless, there was a nice turnout and the
GAMA field was in excellent shape with
registration and impound areas set up.
Another great job by GAMA members.
I was only able to catch a few airplanes
through my lens on Saturday morning, but
they are impressive. I am looking forward to
this year’s event scheduled November 7-8,
2008.
An awesome P-17 by Larry Killingsworth from
Dawsonville GA. Larry has been modeling for
50 years now and his work shows it. His P-17
has an RCS 215 Radial swinging a 32 x 10
propeller and it will haul the mail! It uses a
Sullivan pump for smoke, Axel Scale pilots
and Stitz paint. This impressive P-17 weighs
49 pounds.
The P-51 “Big Beautiful Doll” by Don Rusin of
Warner Robins GA sports a ZDZ 80 with a
Zinger four-blade propeller. It weighs 25
pounds with Robart retracts and Futaba
equipment.
Frank Gracia’s Mitzibusi Zero uses a 3W 75 at
30 pounds. Frank’s hangar is in Fort Valley
GA.
