January 2004 171
THIS COLUMN IS in the January edition
of Model Aviation; another year has passed
and we are starting a new one. I want to
wish a happy, healthy and safe New Year
to you and yours.
I also want to thank all the clubs that
send me your newsletters and information
for this column. It is helpful and much
appreciated.
I want to remind you that we have a
District VII Web page at
www.amadistrictvii.org/newdistvii/
VII_Home_pagex.html. You can also
access the site through the AMA Web page
at www.modelaircraft.org. The site is there
for all district clubs to post information,
schedules, photos, etc.
It appears that clubs seem to think it is
not worth the effort to post a calendar of
events so we could do some planning. We
want to have a calendar on the District VII
site, but we need something to put in it!
An account is set up at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AMA_D7/
for use by District VII members only. As
of this writing, it appears that there is not
enough interest to keep it going. The
discussion group site is still live but no one
uses it.
All this has been to encourage
communication as part of what I set out to
do by keeping the door open 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week.
The Detroit Aero Modelers club (DAMs)
of Detroit held it’s annual Big Bird fly-in at
the club’s field in Rouge Park Detroit.
The weather was just perfect with plenty
of airplanes, pilots, and spectators.
I don’t think I have ever witnessed such
dedication to any hobby/sport than what I
saw at the DAMs fly-in. In fact, I would be
interested in hearing from anyone who can
top this one!
The former Kate Engle takes time between
her wedding ceremony and reception to
make a flight as the newly married Mrs.
Mahon. Congratulations, Kate, to you and
your husband. May you both enjoy a long
and happy marriage.
Moving along, I attended the annual
Pilgrims Big Bird fly-in. This event has
always drawn a large number of pilots and a
wide array of airplanes including warbirds,
aerobatics, and sport types.
Spectator viewing was encouraged during
the noon break.
The weather cooperated for the Pilgrim’s
event with warm temperatures, little wind,
and bright sunny skies.
Jerry Willens’ US Navy F4U Corsair
powered by a Zenoah G-62.
Al Zerber with his Patty Wagstaff-powered
model. It sports a Taurus TS-52.
By now most of you have already started on
projects for the new year. Maybe you’ve
even completed some neglected repairs.
Remember it is not to early to think spring!
See you at the field. Until then, get
involved! Introduce a youngster to our
hobby, and remember, safety is no accident.
