I SINCERELY want to say thank you to all
of the vendors, exhibitors, attendees, and
especially the AMA District VIII volunteer
workers who made the Southwestern
Aeromodeling Conference such a rousing
success! Well done!
The Academy of Model Aeronautics is the
glue that bonds model aircraft enthusiasts
together!
District VIII vice president’s column
information submission guidelines: It is
impossible for me to attend all happenings
and events within AMA District VIII so I
am soliciting your input. I would much
prefer to use something that you have
submitted and you will be given credit for
your submission.
If you would like to see something
placed in the AMA District VIII Model
Aviation column, please use these
procedures. Your submission must be sent to
me only via the US Postal Service. I receive
a great deal of E-mail and separating those
messages that may or may not have been
meant for publication is often impossible. I
cannot accept any electronic photos that are
sent via E-mail. “Snail mail” is the only
accepted path.
Please include a cover letter with the
information you would like to see published.
Articles and pictures should be something
meaningful, not a “get my picture in the
magazine” thing. Model Aviation does this
elsewhere.
Necessary organizational concerns,
unique and special programs, and special
interest things that stand out and are
exemplary must necessarily be given first
priority. Please allow a minimum of two to
three months for something to appear and
observe the following guidelines:
• Please write your information in full—
an introduction, further description, and
conclusion or summary. Limit your word
count to between 200 and 300 words.
• Include one or two photographs (real
photographs are preferred by the magazine
publisher). Do not E-mail digital
photographs or scanned photography to me.
• Please ensure that photos have
association with the body of your text. They
need to exemplify what is happening!
• Include the text of your article on an
IBM-formatted floppy in a .txt file as well as
a hard copy of the article.
The first annual Swap Meet, sponsored by
the North Texas Aeromodelers, was held
at the Denton, Texas, Civic Center. There
were significant door prizes and a big
raffle. The event director was Doyle lrwin
(940) 368-2301 who hosted a fun first
effort! Consider attending the club’s
second Swap Meet next year.
While on my way up to attend the Society
of Antique Modelers (SAM) Champs in
Claremore, Oklahoma, I stopped by Mike’s
Hobby Shop in Oklahoma City. I spent an
enjoyable morning with District VIII
associate vice president Lester Berry
(second in command at the store) and
renewed my acquaintance with the owner,
Mike McMurtry.
Do not ask if he is a proud papa to world
champion team member, son Sean! It is
obvious!
The following photos are from The SAM
Champs. Hot is an understatement when
describing this event!
Above is Mr. Jozwiak processing an Old-
Timer. He was an event director at the
SAM Champs.
The master, Sal Taibi, starts and then
launches a Powerhouse, his own World
War II design. Both are living legends!
Flying, fun, and fellowship! Dr. Sandy
Frank, your representative to the AMA
Executive Council (Board of Directors).
