DISTRICT X celebrates the addition of two
new Gold Leader Clubs. Last year saw the
addition of two new Gold Leader Clubs and
the requalification of another.
The Sun Valley Fliers of Phoenix,
Arizona, and the Coachella Valley RC Club
near Palm Springs, California, both achieved
Gold Leader Club status in 2005, and the
long-standing Santa Clara County Model
Aircraft Skypark club located in the San
Francisco South Bay area near Morgan Hill
reestablished its Leader Club prominence
having achieved Gold Leader Club status at
the start of the program in 1993.
Leader Club status is truly a symbol of
excellence and is no small feat to accomplish.
Qualifying clubs must document their
fulfillment of up to 14 separate objectives
demonstrating the club’s commitment to
safety and leadership standing in promoting
model aviation, community involvement,
youth programs, newcomer support, and
aeromodeling education.
To date, 29 of the more than 300 District
X clubs have earned Leader Club designation
and at the close of 2005, nine of these clubs
maintained Gold Leader Club status. One of
these clubs, the Orange Coast RC Club in
Orange County, California, has maintained its
Gold Leader Club status for all 13 years of the
program’s existence.
Is your club a Leader Club? Qualification
as an AMA Leader Club recognizes your
club’s commitment to excellence and earns
your club a plaque, a bronze Leader Club
plate to be displayed at the club field, and
hat/lapel pins for every member of the club to
signify each individual’s personal
involvement in this achievement. Leader
Clubs are also recognized in AMA
publications and on the AMA Web site.
Congratulations to all the District X AMA
Leader Clubs!
Dick Knapp and club president Murray Ross
accepted the club’s Gold Leader Club award
on behalf of all the members of the Coachella
Valley RC Club at the 2006 AMA Convention,
January 14, 2006.
Past president Howard Kennedy and current
Sun Valley Fliers president Norm Goodnuff
accepted the SVF’s Gold Leader Club Award
at the club meeting on February 7, 2006.
SVF safety officer Bob Frey briefed the club
on the changes to the 2006 AMA Safety
Code at the February meeting.
Jay Steward displayed his gorgeous USN F8C
Helldiver during the show-and-tell portion of
the SVF monthly meeting.
Members of the Santa Clara County Model
Aircraft Skypark’s (SCCMAS) board of
directors were presented the club’s updated
Gold Leader Club plaque at its January 26
meeting. Pictured are Mike French (L),
Steve Smith, Richard Groen, Michael Luvara,
Pat Rose, Richard Luvara, and Tim Jones.

Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, club president
Mike Luvara was awarded the club’s Dumb
Thumb award for his maiden flight of the
finished test model in the Stanford
University-National Geographic Pterosaur
Replica Project. Read the feature article on
this project on page 11 in this issue of MA.
District X event calendar coordinator, Betty
Bliss, staffed the District X kiosk in the AMA
Village at the 2006 AMA Convention. Betty
provided convention goers with the district’s
new 2006 event calendar. The calendar is
also available on the District X Web site. If
you would like your club events added to the
calendar, you may contact Betty at
[email protected] or call (562) 696-4145.
Till next time ... Keep ’em safe and Keep
’em fly’n.
