SEPTEMBER 11, 2004: The Palomar R/C
Fliers’ annual air show at Johnson Field in
north San Diego County was another huge
success. Local Boy Scout Troop 11 kicked
off the event with the presentation of the
colors (above).
Club Instructor Duarte Cabral reported.
“Spectators and pilots with whom I spoke
enjoyed it. I had the chance to watch other
pilots’ styles and the characteristics of their
aircraft. I also noticed that everyone is
unique in how they fly.
“One pilot did a four-point roll that was
so low he had to remove thorns from the
shrubs from the left wingtip.
“There were a number of new airplanes
just released to the market and I enjoyed
watching these airplanes fly. Of note was
the Hangar 9E XTRA and the YAK 54 by
Kiki S.
“If you missed the air show, you missed
out on the essence of the hobby and a great
time!”
Dave Johnson from Hemet, California,
joined the show. Dave is noted to be the
first modeler to fly an RC aircraft across
the Arctic Circle; he also piloted the same
aircraft 365 consecutive days in
celebration of his 80th birthday.
Hall of Fame member Bill Netzeband
retrieves Dave’s Sport 40 after another
successful flight. Each Kraft sticker on the
airplane represents one of Dave’s 365
consecutive flights.
Club president Bob Lang operated the
microphone, providing commentary for
the event.
The Palomar R/C Flier’s Combat special
interest group put on a thrilling Combat
demonstration and ended the show with a
low, low balloon bust.
October 21-24, 2004: The Tucson
Aerobatic Shootout returned once again to
the Old Pueblo. Under the direction of
Michael Marcellin, this year’s shootout was
bigger and better than ever.
The annual event is sponsored by Dave
Johnson’s Desert Aircraft and hosted by the
Tucson International Modelplex Association
(TIMPA). The TIMPA site west of Tucson,
Arizona, has proven to be a perfect venue
for the Shootout.
Now in its third year, this international
event is attracting pilots from Canada,
Europe, South America, New Zealand, and
the entire United States, to compete for
$50,000 in merchandise and prizes.
Bernd Beschorner of Bremen-Weyhe,
Germany, is stage center with his 3Wpowered
Ultimate as he thrills the event’s
capacity crowed.
Bill Hempel of Tucson, Arizona, brings
his YAK 54 to a standstill on its Mejzlik
28.5 x 12 propller as he demonstrates the
aircraft’s 3-D capability.
Till next time ... Keep ’em safe and Keep
’em fly’n.
