THE 2008 AMA Convention was by all
accounts a huge success. Attendance was up
from last year and attendees enjoyed
Southern California’s gorgeous weather. The
2008 event also saw the first-ever formal
associate vice president (AVP) training.
District X’s 12 AVPs participated in the
two-hour seminar and received valuable
training on AMA programs, member
services, and operations. The meeting also
presented the opportunity to recognize the
district’s senior AVPs for their many years of
service to District X and our AMA members.
AMA President Dave Mathewson
presented AMA’s Distinguished Service
Award to Jim Giffin and AMA’s Superior
Service Award to Tim Attaway for his years
of service as one of District X’s four Contest
Coordinators. Dave also presented the
Distinguished Service Award to Don Gulihur,
Bob Reynolds, Jerry Neuberger, Bill Malvey,
Darwin Barrie, Wayne Hamada, and Marc
Karpowich.
District X AVPs received well-deserved
recognition for their years of service to the
AMA membership
District AVPs received valuable training on
various AMA programs and member services.
IMAC Booth at the AMA convention was
staffed this year by (L-R) Joey Cass, Momo
Duncan, Steve Dente, and Mad Max Duncan
creator of The Flying Giants.
Changes in the District X staff: Don Gulihur
from Santee, California, has chosen to retire
from his AVP position and Tim Attaway of
Chula Vista has agreed to fill the vacancy.
Tim has served many years as the District X
contest coordinator for Southern California
and will continue in the coordinator role
while also providing AVP representation in
San Diego County.
I wish Don well in his retirement and
extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for
a job well done.
I want to welcome three others to the
District X AVP staff. Jon Wilson of Ryde,
California, will provide representation for
California’s Central Valley and will also
serve as the District X webmaster.
Rick Maida of Morgan Hill fills the
position previously held by Glenn Carter of
Walnut Creek and will represent the clubs and
AMA members in the San Francisco Bay
area.
Scott Malta of Merced, California, is
filling the vacancy created by the departure of
Don Goeschl and will cover south-central
California. Scott has also agreed to take on
the task of tracking and coordinating flyingsite
issues within the district. Scott will work
directly with the District X clubs and will
serve as a liaison to AMA’s Western Region
Flying Site Assistance Coordinator.
On behalf of the district, my thanks go out
to all of our departing staff members and I’d
like to extend a special thanks to the new
officers for volunteering their time and
expertise in support of
District X.
January 12-13, the Corona R/C Club of
Corona CA provided static displays and RC
demonstrations at the 2008 Annual Cable
Airport Air Fair in Upland CA.
Dave Mathewson (R), AMA president, took
time out of his busy schedule at the 2008
AMA Convention to assist the Corona R/C
Club in presenting awards of appreciation to
airport owner Bob Cable (L) and the local
EAA Chapter 448 located at Cable Airport.
Betty Bliss of Whittier CA was awarded
AMA’s Superior Service Award at the 2008
Convention for her years of service to the
modelers of Southern California and AMA
District X. Assisting in the presentation were
District X AVPs Jerry Neuberger (L) and
Wayne Hamada.
Till next time ... Keep ’em safe and Keep
’em fly’n.
