I WANT to thank Associate Vice
President Mike Mosbrooker for the
following report on the ninth annual
Evergreen International Big Bird Fly-In.
“The event was hosted by the Skagit
Radio Control Club at its field in Lyman,
Washington. The two-day event was
officially held on July 31 and August 1,
although many pilots arrived as early as
Thursday and got in two great days of
flying on the Thursday and Friday
preceding the formal dates for the event.
From Surrey, British Columbia, Chris
brought his Stinger, Aeromaster, and
Space Walker.
“Amazingly, the weather was perfect
for the whole period. Wonderful food was
sold by the mobile portion of Mom’s Café
from Burlington, Washington, and all
pilots were given a memento picture of
themselves and their favorite airplane and
lunch on Saturday. Unfortunately, there
were a couple of cases where this will be
the last picture of some of these aircraft.
“The field was surrounded by corn this
year and markers and walkie-talkies were
available for use in locating a few
airplanes that got into the corn. The
efficiency in locating downed models
indicated that the people from the Skagit
club have been practicing this a lot.
From Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, a
1/3-scale Sopwith Pup.
Dan Butters and Jim Anderson brought
two of the four identical CAP 232s that
were flown at Lyman. Dan is president of
the host Skagit R/C Club.
Greg brought his Aeroworks 33% Extra
330L with DA 100. It was a great-flying
airplane but unfortunately it did not
make it through the weekend.
This is a scratch-built 1/4-scale Lockheed
Vega with Mac Minarelli 78cc Twin. It
represents 21/2 years of work that is truly
beautiful to behold. Nigel came down
from Chilliwack, British Columbia.
“Forty pilots from Washington and
British Columbia flew approximately 80
aircraft plus a few others that were flown
before or after the formal activities each
day. Many spectators were treated to a
really great show.”
Norm brought his 1/4-scale Staudacher
from Oak Harbor, Washington. This
aircraft is electrically powered with an
Actro Brushless 40-5 motor and 10s3p
Thunderpower Li-Poly battery pack.
Norm gets roughly 15 minutes of
acrobatic flying from a single charge.
Dwayne Padgett brought his very nice
1/4-scale Stinson Reliant.
Gary Owen and his 1/5-scale Stinson
Reliant SR9 are from Seattle,
Washington. The model is powered by
an O.S. Gemini 160.
This shows a portion of the pit area with
lots of big airplanes and some really tall,
healthy corn. Corn bounded the field on
three sides.
Until next time.
