AS I WRITE this, there is no doubt that
winter has hit the Pacific Northwest. Passes
were closed for extended periods and there
were not many reports of flying activities.
Now I know there are a few groups of
crazies—excuse me, all-weather fliers—so
why not send me some reports of your
activities?
As I was writing this I was set to leave here
yesterday for the Second Model Expo in
Monroe, Washington. After spending the
day checking pass reports, it was obvious
that the trip would not be possible. In central
Washington, roads were drifting shut as fast
as the were cleared.
For those of you who didn’t make the
Expo last year, it was a great event
considering it was in a new location, under
new management, and had some other
obstacles. This year a much bigger building
was available and more vendors were
expected.
The weather on that side of the state
looks good and I am sure there was a good
turnout. I talked to several Canadians who
went last year and they were bringing
friends with them for this year’s event.
Mike Mosbrooker, associate vice
president, sent me some pictures of the
show.
This is a view of the show.
This sprint car was on display at the Expo.
This beautiful Fokker D.VII World War I
fighter was one of the highlights.
Another World War I aircraft at the Expo
was this Spad VIII.
These are some of the World War I warbirds
on display.
The Hughes Flying Boat was on display.
I received a disk from one of the clubs with
photos of a recent event. The envelope of
lightweight paper was torn and the disk
damaged to the point that half of the
laminated label was torn and it was broken in
three places.
This is a great way to send information
and pictures, but be sure you send them in
some sort of protection. A jewel case would
be ideal but at least use a medium-weight
manila envelope or some other form of
protection.
Last but not least, I was shocked by the
extremely poor voter turnout during our last
election. As it was a presidential election, I
would have expected a much larger turnout.
How many of you noted the total number of
votes cast?
Each election in the past few years has
had a poor turnout but this last one may have
set a record.
I’m looking for some help! I have been
tasked with trying to find a solution to this
problem, and have a few ideas. What I would
like is to have your input. Please take a
minute to give me your thoughts on this.
Don’t pull any punches; tell me what you
think and what might be done to improve this
low voter turnout.
I’m always bragging on you all—that’s
Southern talk—here in our district. We have
very few problems compared to some others
and for the most part our clubs work together.
Let’s put our heads together and see if we
can generate some constructive ideas. Be sure
to respond because if I don’t get some good
input I will appoint a committee and the
chairman will be someone who did not
respond to this.
Until next time. Bruce.
