Safety Code Changes for 2014
The AMA Safety Committee regularly reviews the Academy’s Safety Code. The committee members consider changes to it based on feedback and proposals received from members and/or AMA SIGs, as well as other developments in the aeromodeling community.
The following is a brief summary of the changes that were made to the Safety Code, effective January 1, 2014.
In the “General” section:
- The word “education” was added, to accurately reflect AMA’s mission and vision.
- In item 2(e) the word “aircraft” was changed to “airplane.”
In the “Radio Control” section:
- The word “knowingly” was inserted back into item 5. This was inadvertently dropped when changing the overall look and layout of the information.
- Item 7 was slightly reworded for grammatical reasons, with no change to the intent.
- Considering a safety proposal from the International Radio Controlled Helicopter Association, as well as independent requests from other members, item 8 was modified to clarify adequate lighting systems for night-flying operation.
- Subparagraph (c) was added to item 9 to include and outline the use of failsafe, stabilization, and autopilot systems.
- Finally, we streamlined the Web document references throughout the Code by removing the document titles.
AMA will provide updated Safety Code posters to all chartered clubs. These will be mailed in January along with club charter renewal documentation.
The Executive Council and the Safety Committee carefully consider changes to the code. It’s always their goal to find ways to make the hobby fun and safe.
