Executive Council Meeting Highlights

Motions made at the April 1, 2000 Executive Council Meeting in Muncie, IN

The motions below are part of the unofficial minutes of the meeting. Minutes from a given meeting are not official until they are approved at the next quarterly Council meeting. Questions or comments on the motions should be addressed to your District Vice President.

Minutes of the January 17, 2000 Executive Council meeting were approved.

Motions

MOTION I: Moved by S. Frank (VIII), seconded by B. Oberdieck (VII). To make the membership survey findings available to the membership.

The MOTION passed unanimously.

MOTION II: Moved by J. McNeill (V), seconded by W. DeCou (II). To accept the Safety Committee report on SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR MODEL AIRCRAFT GAS TURBINE ENGINES. (See the AMA web site for complete report: www.modelaircraft.org)

MOTION III: Moved by R. Miller (IX), seconded by J. McNeill (V). To accept the committee's recommendation of Gooden & Ellis as architects for the museum exterior renovations.

MOTION IV: Moved by C. Bauer (VI), seconded by C. Foreman (IV). To accept the recommendations of the committee for the changes to the rule book, items number 1–3 of January 6, 2000 report as presented, with changes.

The MOTION passed. 12 yes; 1 no (V). (That Contest Directors will be renamed to Event Directors. Remove the language used to describe the number and type of awards required for "A" rated events.)

MOTION V: Moved by C. Foreman (IV), seconded by R. Miller (IX). The chairman of the nominating committee will verify that all nomination letters, candidate acceptance statements and candidate resumes have been received and verified by AMA Headquarters prior to convening of the nominations committee meeting.
If any of the candidate nomination letters, candidate acceptance statements or candidate resumes are missing, the committee chairman will contact the candidate and give notice as to what documents are missing and required for the election process.
It will be the responsibility of the candidate notified to provide the committee with any documents that are missing and requested prior to the published date of the nominations committee meeting.
This notification will be done at least 15 (fifteen) days prior to the convening of the nominations committee meeting.

It is with great regret that I report the passing of Bev Wisniewski. Bev is well-known for her many years of volunteer work at many AMA Nationals, not to mention her help at various other events. Bev always had a warm smile and a hug for her many friends and will be missed by many.

The Canadian Nationals will be held in Vancouver, B.C., July 29 through August 6, 2000. RC Soaring events will be held on July 29 and 30 in Mission, B.C., at Anderson's Turf Farm, the same site as the 1999 NWSS Tournament. Information on all events and application forms can be found at http://members.home.net/ams2000.

For all you float fliers, the Rogue Eagles RC Club at Medford is holding two Float Flys at Lake Agate. The spring event is May 13–14 and the fall event will be held on October 7–8. For more information, contact Bill Grove at [email protected].

I received an e-mail from Dave Lawler, the secretary of the Bend Aero Modelers, Bend, OR. Dave reports that in the last few years their club had dwindled to just a few members, but recently they have grown to 40 active members. In addition to the new members, their flying field also has a new paved runway. The club also put on a show at the River Bend Mall on March 26 and 27. It's good to see a club that has had some difficulties bounce back.

Al Franklin of the Cascade Big Birds club reports that they were about to lose their field in Monroe, WA, but found a way to save it. They broke open their piggy banks and bought the field. I guess that's one way to beat being evicted! Al Franklin is the builder of the beautiful 1/4-scale Grumman Super Widgeon that appeared in this column recently.

The Barons Model Club of Spokane recently held their annual Show and Swap Meet. All three of these gentlemen are part of the Barons' Over-the-Hill Escadrille.

As you read this, work will have begun on the new Headquarters building in Muncie. Since 1993, AMA's staff has been working out of a warehouse-type building designed to house the National Model Aviation Museum and the Lee Renaud Memorial Library. The present office space has been "temporary" for seven years. At this time there are no permanent offices, just work areas. This is not a good work environment and not conducive to attracting new employees.

Once the new office space is available, the museum and library can be finished. Many aircraft and books have to be kept in storage, as there is not room to display them now.

The new 25,000-square-foot Headquarters facility will resemble an airport concourse, complete with a tower. Observation decks will allow visitors to view various flying activities around the site. The building will be built south of the pond that collects runoff water from the building and parking lots, and will serve as a heat sink for the climate control system.

Water-source heat pumps will use the energy stored in the pond for heating and air-conditioning, reducing the building's reliance on fossil fuel-derived energy. This will reduce operating costs and the building's environmental impact.

It's good to hear positive stories in the wake of news about flying fields being lost. We are fortunate here in the Northwest. Unlike many areas, we do not have the building rush being experienced in more populated regions of the country. Nevertheless, we need to continue to protect what we have, and one of the best ways to do that is to be a "good neighbor" in your community. As a club, get involved in civic projects, work with local schools, and do anything else that shows your community that you care about them. It will pay off in the end.
