Roy Brown — Europe associate vice president (retired)
Roy Brown served as a District II associate vice president for many years, covering Europe for us. Roy retired last fall but sent this "swan song" report.
"What a way to go! My last participation in flying in Europe was June 10–14 in the VII International SAM Championships in Suhl, Germany. There were four AMA members participating in the meet. The highlight was Ed Hamler, AMA 1639, SAM 170, of Napa, California, who was the contest director.
"There were approximately 97 contestants entered with more than 200 Old-Timer models. The contestants were from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, Sweden, the USA, and San Marino.
"American entrants were AMA and SAM members Dick Bartkowski and Dave Harding of the Prop Stoppers of Delaware County, Pennsylvania (SAM 76), and me.
"To have Ed Hamler, an American, as the contest director of a European event just made it a great way to end my tenure in Europe. This was the seventh European SAM Championships and Ed has competed in all seven."
Roy, thanks for this report and for the many years you served District II in Europe!
Pine Barren Modelers — Haunted Fly report
Joe Ciraulo, vice president of the Pine Barren Modelers of Barnegat, New Jersey, sent this report on the club’s second annual Haunted Fly.
"It was fun to say the least. We had a great turnout and most of us were in costume as shown in the pictures. Last year everyone was a little nervous about wearing a costume, but this year was more relaxed and a lot more fun.
"Rick Cullen is our resident 'Doctor,' and Dick Hada is our club 'Keg.' It seems liquid refreshment was the theme of the day, as pictured below by member Gene Koch who was all bottled up.
"Of course security is always important at our events, and to help protect fellow members, Joe Ciraulo made sure that the theme of the day wasn't consumed while flying."
Strega — Billy Sargent
Hall of Famer Windy Urtnowski sent along a photo of Billy Sargent displaying his Strega. Powered by a Ro-Jett 76 engine, it weighs 62 ounces. Billy flies this with a custom handle made by Ray Dore.
Have a fun April as we kick off our flying season, and remember to keep 'em three in the green.
