AMA News District III - 2007/07
ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT (AVP)
Jim Martin provided the following reports.
RORKS Awards Banquet
I had the pleasure of attending an awards banquet hosted by the Ross Ohio Radio Kontrol Society (RORKS) club in Chillicothe, Ohio, on March 8, 2007. I was asked by Bob Dodd to speak about the new programs that the AMA is implementing in the coming year.
When I arrived, the first thing on the agenda was a scrumptious carry-in dinner. I did my best to make sure that there was no food left over. After the meal it was time to answer questions about the AMA's policies.
After my presentation, the real reason for the evening began. Charlie Lee, president of the club, assisted by Melvin States, vice president, started the awards presentations. They presented a plaque to Don McCoy for all of his contributions to the club during the past 25 years of the club's existence. Charlie's father, Carl Lee, was awarded a plaque posthumously for all of his work as a founding father of the club. Charlie was proud to accept the plaque on his father's behalf.
The evening seemed to end all too soon. I want to thank the entire RORKS membership for making me feel as though I had been a longtime member of the club. I want to extend a special heartfelt thank you to all of the wives for the wonderful meal. This is what belonging to a great club is all about.
Weak Signals / Toledo Expo and CMAC Visit (AVP Joe Vislay)
A special thanks is extended to the Weak Signals club for its hard work with the 2007 Toledo Expo. AVP Joe Vislay provided the following account.
My wife asked me to accompany her on a business trip scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 19–20, 2007. She had to go to Akron, Ohio, and didn't want to drive by herself. I figured I could use a weekend to recover from the Toledo Expo the previous weekend—and what a great time I had there—so I agreed to go.
On Friday I visited the Military Aircraft Preservation Society (MAPS) museum located at the Akron/Canton Airport. They only have guided tours there and I ended up being part of a group of students that was also touring the museum. I enjoyed the tour and was able to assist the guide by telling various historical and operational facts about some of the aircraft on display.
On Saturday I visited the Corsair Model Aircraft Club's (CMAC) flying field located at the Summit County Fairgrounds. The club has a nice flying area in one corner of the fairgrounds. I met Jim Highlands, the president, along with several other members of the club. The weather was absolutely gorgeous that day and many members were taking advantage of the break from the cold that had plagued the area in recent weeks.
Jim explained some of his club's programs that involve the local youth groups. I really enjoyed my time visiting with the club members and my only regret was that I didn't take an airplane with me. Next time I'll be sure to take one along.
If you're ever in the Akron area, stop by the CMAC flying field and say hello to the gang.
