SERGE KRAUSS, newsletter editor for the
North Coast Control Liners in Cleveland,
Ohio, provided some insight into a great
activity generated by that club. Following is
an excerpt from the newsletter:
“Flying season’s here and the club made
the best of its outreach function Saturday,
entertaining and demonstrating CL flying to a
large number of Boy Scouts at the fairground
circles. Predicted overall attendance at the
BSA event was 3,000 and we entertained
quite a few of them.
“Weather was great, and the event was
much more successful than any of us had
foreseen, with the number of Scouts taking
the handle of a 1/2A trainer exceeding the
number of flight certificates available—
twice! Dave Evar made two trips to the copier
for more certificates.
“So popular was the dual instruction that
demonstration flights ceased for long periods
at a time and 75 of 81 instructional flight
requests were honored before the supply of
trainers was depleted. Gary’s ½A profile
Stuntmaster and Jim Skinner’s Fox .35-
powered Shoestring, trailing a streamer for
yaw and speed control, were the dualinstruction
aircraft. Ron did most of the dual
flying, and Jim pitched in with some loops.
“Gary H., Dave E., Jim S., Ron, Frank,
Bob H., Carl, I, and others were there. The
Scouts were eager to ask questions about
airplanes and
materials, but
especially to get to
that handle. Gary
Hull doubled as
Carrier flight
demonstrator and
calligrapher, aided
by Rick in the air,
with two slowflighters
simultaneously
airborne.
“Gary’s autogiro
was a big hit with
several requests for its reappearance. Ron’s
aerobatic flights with his ARF Cardinal really
got their attention. After his initial level laps,
the Scouts weren’t ready for the reverse
wingover which drew cheers.
“Maybe next time we can demonstrate
Combat since the Scouts asked about that
more than once.
“While I don’t expect a wild influx of
young enthusiasts directly from this
experience, we may have planted some seeds.
You never can predict when this awareness
and understanding of CL flight may ignite a
new passion.”

The North Coast Control Liners seventh
annual Cleveland Area Stunt Championship
will be held September 22-23 at the
Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. For

Thanks to Sean Rupp we have a report on
the Hillside Aeromodelers Spring Combat
event in Ohio.
“The Hillside Aeromodelers and Rick
Fraley of the Richmond Propbusters hosted a
weekend of Combat May 5 in Richmond and
May 6 back in Williams County, Ohio.
“Those coming from points north spent
the night with us and carpooled to the
Richmond meet on Saturday morning.
“Sunday morning at Hillside we flew five
rounds of Limited B in the morning with 15
pilots competing, and five rounds of Open B
with 12 pilots competing. Winds were high
throughout the day making launches and spot
landings a work of art, however, the event
went off without incident. Young Eric Gilkey
came out on top in Limited B for the day with
his first top finish in only his third meet!
“We took a quick break for lunch put on
by the moms and Scouts of Pack 25. We
raised approximately $150 for the Scouts in
donations for the day. Thanks to Lauri and
Beth for taking such good care of us and
thanks to the pilots and spectators for
supporting the Scouts!
“Open B was fast and furious as expected,
with Corey Stein getting his first-ever top
finish in Open B with his Americanized
Russian-style flying wing. He was followed
closely by Mike Fredricks also using a
Russian-style wing. Rick Wyse had a solid
third-place finish and only 20 points
separated fourth through sixth. Mike
Fredricks took top overall combined points
for the day.
“The Hillside Aeromodelers and Aaron,
Corey, and I would like to thank you all for
coming to fly with us and we hope you had as
much fun as we did. Our fall Combat event
has been scheduled for September 15-16
featuring Open, Limited B, the return of the
Open C event, and more Combat games if
time permits this year.”
Eric Gilkey took first place in Limited B and
Corey Stein was first in Open B.
