MIKE LOSH of the Wyoming Valley RC
Flyers provided the following information to
Matt Turowski, one of the District III
associate vice presidents.
“The Seventh Annual Wings Full of
Wishes Air Show and Car Cruise benefited
the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater
Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia.
The main attraction was an Army National
Guard Black Hawk Helicopter and an AH-64
Apache flown in from Fort Indian Town Gap.
“This was our fifth year we have had a Car
Cruise at the event and it was the largest to
date. To raise money we raffled off a large
number of items, held a bake sale, offered
face painting, sold event T-shirts, had food
concessions, and accepted donations. Make-
A-Wish families also attended.
“This year fliers from five area clubs
helped with the flying: the West End Wings,
Tuscarora RC Club, the Black Sheep
Squadron, the Polish Air Force, and the
Wyoming Valley RC Flyers. All the fliers did
a great job. Gratitude is extended to Great
Planes Model Products for its many years of
support of this event.
“This year’s proceeds were a record
$4,300 and will make it possible to grant the
wish of a nine-year-old girl named Jamie from
Kingston, Pennsylvania. The seven-year total
for the event exceeds $25,000!”
The helicopters of the Pennsylvania National
Guard.
Some of the fliers demonstrated extreme
flight.
Serge Krauss, editor of the North Coast
Control Liners (NCCL) newsletter in
Cleveland, Ohio, provided the following
report and Will Hubin provided the pictures.
“The NCCL Cleveland Stunt
Championships was a success, and I know
everyone will want to thank Dave Heinzman
for a splendid job as
event director! We
also appreciated his
generosity in
providing pizza, soft
drinks, and water for
everyone.
“The high winds of
the last couple
contests were greatly
abated this year. Although sporadic gusts
sometimes created challenges, this year’s
weather was just wonderful.
“We may have to rename the Classic and
Expert events. Since I came on the scene, I
don’t remember anyone other than Bob
McDonald winning either. His Ares and
Werwage P-47 handled the wind well and
allowed Bob to show some high-level flying.
“A good friend of the NCCL contest in
recent years, Fort Wayne’s ageless Wes
Dick (he’s 75 but I don’t think he knows it),
returned after a year away to fly amazingly
well. He pushed Bob McDonald to a narrow
win in Classic and placing a very close third
to John Paris in Expert. In the contest results
a couple of finishes were decided by less
than two points.
“John Paris was strong, but perhaps
upstaged by his daughter Grace who scored
a 275 to win Beginner Stunt, showing good
mastery of wingovers, inverted flight, and
inside and outside maneuvers. She looked
imperturbable—very impressive!
“One pilot generating great interest among
the visiting contestants was Norm Skuderin,
who demonstrated his marvelous three-linecontrol
scale Corsair. Norm did touch-andgoes
that had everyone’s eyes glued to the
main circle. Good show and thanks Norm!
“For the beautifully cut circles this year,
we can all thank Frank Zabudske.
“Our ‘Learn to Fly—Free’ circle was a
success! Gary Hull furnished planes and
instruction, aided by Walt Elbrecht, Dave
Evar, Dan Radway, Ed and Zach Pomnitz,
and young friends, while the participating
kids—and some adults—had a good time.
“One of the highlights of the contest was a
lady and her father in the shade of our scoring
tent. She learned of our contest and said she
knew he would love to attend. She was quite
enthusiastic and asked him many questions.
When I had a break in scoring, I introduced
myself.
“William Schwab and is 90 years old. He
is a charming and personable man and a true
pioneer of Control Line modeling and flight.
He and his daughter showed me a 1941
Model Aviation News article he authored
entitled ‘Controlled Lightning,’ detailing his
CL plane of that name and his methods of
construction and flying.
“He used to fly at the Clark Avenue
Bridge and worked for 36 years for NASA
on nuclear power devices. Mr. Schwab had
owned the class C FF world record, which
he set with a Playboy Sr.
“Mr. Schwab said that he knew Jim
Walker, having met him when he
demonstrated CL. He remarked that Jim
Walker asked him whether he wanted to try
flying CL and he accepted, not telling Jim
that he’d been doing it for a couple years
already. I didn’t ask when he first flew CL.
“Thanks to all who participated in this
year’s Cleveland Stunt Championships.”
