District IV

Bliss Teague, District IV Vice President; [email protected]

Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia

For 15 consecutive years, the Fredericksburg Aeromasters of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and the Baltimore Area Soaring Society (BASS) of Baltimore, Maryland, have qualified as Gold Leader Clubs. I presented the Fredericksburg club president, Daniel Hayworth, with the plaque from AMA at the Bealeton Fly-In, September 7–9, 2007.

When arrangements have been made, a plaque will be formally presented to BASS along with a District IV flag.

During last year's Bealeton event, sponsored by the District of Columbia Radio Control (DCRC) club and CDed by Andy Kane, two other awards were given. DCRC received a District IV flag for its annual summer flying camp described in a previous column. Club member Jim McDaniel accepted the flag on behalf of the club.

The Valley R.C. Flying Club held its annual Ray Gordon Jumbo event in June 2007 at the club field in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Pilots from Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, West Virginia, Florida, and Georgia attended. Tim Blankenship CDed the event and provided the following information.

The meet was well attended. One of the favorites was Dave McQueeney with his 106-inch Bearcat F8F, powered by an impressive-sounding radial engine. The aircraft presented at the event ranged from the giant Sig Rascal to World War I biplanes, World War II heavy metal aircraft, Extras, primary trainers, and a Christen Eagle.

Saturday evening everyone was treated to a pizza dinner and the movie Flyboys. AMA's Air Show Team from Danville, Virginia, headed by Jeff Phillips, kept the simulator going from morning until dark. The line to get a chance to fly the simulators was steady both days. This is one of the many things that AMA Air Show Teams do for our great sport.
