Toledo Show (Toledo Weak Signals)
The greatest radio-control aircraft show in the world is held in Toledo, Ohio, on April 3-5, and is hosted by the Toledo Weak Signals. For additional information, see the Toledo Show website: www.toledoshow.com.
The Toledo Weak Signals not only produce this show; the club also does considerably more for model aviation. One of these activities was to host an event for the children of the Great Start Collaborative. More than 100 children and their parents were treated to a day of flying and other activities.
Associate Vice President Joe Vislay provided pictures of the event.
Black Sheep Squadron Open House and Fun-Fly
The Black Sheep Squadron of Northeast Pennsylvania, an AMA Gold Leader Club, recently held its ninth annual Open House and Fun-Fly for the Valley Santa charity. A local newspaper and a local law firm sponsor the charity, which purchases toys for needy children at Christmas.
The club adopted the charity in 2000, and to date has raised more than $7,000 for the children. The event is very popular with club members, eliciting 95–100% membership participation every year. In the nine years since its inception, more than 200 fliers from 12 RC clubs in three states, roughly 25 local businesses, and hundreds of local families have turned out to support the event.
Besides raising money for a worthy cause, the fun-fly has food and fun for everyone: fliers, family, and children. Club members have plenty of time to fly as well as to work.
This event has been a great way to introduce the club to the local community, and the support of the community has been important in the search for a new flying field. Every club should consider such an event, if only to enhance club enthusiasm and camaraderie.
A special thanks to the Black Sheep’s vice president, Bill Jones, who has coordinated the event since 2000, and to all who have supported this good cause.
