Old Town Valley Flyers R/C Club — Steve Miller honored

Steve Miller, club president of the Old Town Valley Flyers R/C Club for the last eight years, was presented an award for service and dedication to the club. Steve helped relocate the AMA-chartered club from one property to another, and his primary focus was convincing landowners that the club is a positive asset to the community.

Steve has held most offices in the club. He is the club webmaster and the field cook at all the cookouts and picnics. He is always willing to help with field maintenance and upkeep, and he helped implement upgrades to the property such as the AMA safety tables.

Steve continues to promote the hobby and is always concerned that the club is moving in a positive direction.

Two junior members from the Old Town Valley Flyers were awarded gold medals. Chaz Vickers and Greg Miller were recognized for their accomplishments in advanced modeling at the club dinner. Both young men show superb control of model aircraft along with great showmanship. They are helpful and courteous to others at the field and are fine examples of youth doing things right in this great hobby.

Flying Tigers RC Club (Toledo, Ohio) — Cub Scout exhibition and training

The Flying Tigers RC Club of Toledo, Ohio, hosted an exhibition and training event for Wolf Den 3 of Cub Scout Pack 41 at the club field located off Geiser Road. The event was an overwhelming success, made possible by the hard work and dedication of the club officers and members.

Ray Foley, club commander, along with Tom Haupright, vice commander, organized the Sig LT-40 trainer airplane program to train Cub Scouts and other grade-school children interested in model aviation.

  • Program equipment: ten identical Sig LT-40 aircraft powered by O.S. Max .46AX engines.
  • Each trainer was built by a club member specifically for training purposes.

In addition to teaching Scouts and other kids, the club runs a regular training program that meets every Wednesday night during the flying season.

The Flying Tigers host many static and flight displays in the Toledo area for Cub Scouts and various community organizations throughout the year. The club’s most recent outing included a static display at Suburban Airport in Lambertville, Michigan, for Scouts working on their aviation merit badges.

The club also participates in volunteer programs such as Adopt-a-Highway to help with litter control, and takes great pride in the city and park programs that make the Flying Tigers Field possible.

Flying Hillbillies RC Club (Winfield, West Virginia) — Boy Scout buddy-box flying day

The Flying Hillbillies RC Club of Winfield, West Virginia, hosted a buddy-box flying day for Boy Scouts at the Jackson’s Mill 4-H campground near Weston, West Virginia. The event was sponsored by the United Methodist Men of West Virginia during its annual weekend retreat at the camp.

Methodist churches in West Virginia sponsor many local Boy Scout troops. Two of the Methodist Men in the club, Don Cipolla and Jim Synder, decided it would be a great idea to introduce the Boy Scouts to RC flying while at the retreat. The club spread the word in its newsletter, and the Flying Wing Nutz RC Club of St. Marys, West Virginia, volunteered members and airplanes to help.

The flying began mid-afternoon, with approximately 100 Boy Scouts of all ages getting some time on the sticks. The kids thought it was “cool,” and many wished there had been more time to fly. Several club members brought airplanes—from park flyers to 150cc gasers—and performed demonstrations. Great club participation produced a successful event.
