STEVE MILLER, club president of the Old
Town Valley Flyers R/C Club for the last
eight years, was presented an award for
service and dedication to the club. Steve has
helped relocate the AMA chartered club from
one property to another. His primary focus
was to convince landowners that the club is a
positive asset to the community.
Steve has held most of the offices in the
club and is the club webmaster and field cook
at all the cookouts and picnics. He is always
willing to help with field maintenance and
upkeep as well as help implement upgrades to
the property such as the AMA safety tables.
Steve continues to promote the hobby and
is always concerned that the club is moving in
a positive direction.
Two special junior members from the Old
Town Valley Flyers were awarded gold
medals. Chaz Vickers and Greg Miller were
recognized for their accomplishments in
advanced modeling at the club dinner.
Both young men show superb control of
model aircraft along with great showmanship.
They are very helpful and courteous to others
at the field. Chaz and Greg are true examples
of the youth of this great hobby who are doing
things right.

The Flying Tigers RC club of Toledo,
Ohio, hosted an exhibition and training
event for Wolf Den 3 of Cub Scout Pack 41
at the club field located off of Geiser Road.
The event was an overwhelming success,
made possible by the hard work and
dedication of the club officers and members.
Ray Foley, club commander, along with
Tom Haupright, vice commander,
organized the Sig LT-40 trainer airplane
program with the intent to train Cub Scouts
and other grade-school kids interested in
our great sport of model aviation.
Ten identical Sig LT-40 aircraft,
powered by O.S. Max .46AX engines
comprise the program’s equipment. Each
trainer was built by one of the club
members for the sole purposes of training
individuals to fly.
In addition to teaching Scouts and other
kids, the club has a regular training
program that meets on every Wednesday
night during the flying season.
The Flying Tigers RC club hosts many
static and flight displays in the Toledo area
for Cub Scouts and various community
organizations throughout the year. The
club’s most recent outing included
participating in a static display at Suburban
Airport in Lambertville, Michigan, for a
number of Scouts working on their aviation
merit badges.
The club also does volunteer programs
such as Adopt-a-Highway to help with
litter control, and takes great pride in the
city and park programs that make the
Flying Tigers Field possible.

The Flying Hillbillies RC Club of Winfield,
West Virginia, hosted a buddy-box flying day
for the Boy Scouts at the beautiful Jackson’s
Mills 4-H campground near Weston, West
Virginia. The event was sponsored by the
United Methodist Men of West Virginia at it’s
annual weekend retreat at the camp.
Methodist Churches of West Virginia
sponsor many of the local Boy Scout troups
and two of the Methodist Men in the club,
Don Cipolla and Jim Synder, decided it would
be a great idea to introduce the Boy Scouts to
RC flying while at the annual retreat.
The club spread the word in its newsletter
about the event and the Flying Wing Nutz RC
Club of St. Marys, West Virginia, volunteered
some of its members’ time and airplanes to
help with the event.
The flying began mid-afternoon with
approximately 100 Boy Scouts of all ages
getting some time on the sticks. The kids
really thought it was “cool,” and many wished
there was time to fly more.
Several club members brought airplanes—
from park flyers to 150cc gassers—and
performed demos. It was a great way to
introduce young people to our wonderful
hobby.
Great club participation produced a successful
event!
