HI FOLKS! Every weekend from mid
May to the end of June is packed with
airplane events ... busy times! I want to
cover some articles that were sent to me by
our District IX associate vice presidents
(AVPs).
But first, good friend Gary Himes sent
me the following about losing a club
member, Duane Grigsby, as reported by
Rick McQuerrey: I think it’s important to
recognize the accomplishments of fellow
modelers.
“Longtime
Northern Knight
Duane Grigsby
passed away March
26 after a short
battle with cancer.
Those of us who
knew Duane will
without a doubt be
better for it.
“Duane didn’t do
a lot of flying in the
last couple of years
and yet whenever
we had an event you could bet he would be
there and if food was involved he would
always bring one of Grace’s pies or
cobblers and they were always very good.
“Duane used to always come to the field
on training night and if nothing else we
would just sit and shoot the breeze for a
while.
“He could always be counted on for the
mall shows and always came out to shows
away from the field and would talk to
anyone who wanted information about the
club.
“At one point Duane held office in the
Knights and I would always appreciate any
input from him or any of the other longtime
club members. He will be missed.”
Colorado AVP Jim Wallen sent in a report
about what his Gold Level Leader Club, the
Arvada Aeromodelers (AAM), did with the
Boy Scouts. As a past Scoutmaster, I have
a special interest in Scouting and aviation!
“Although the weather looked
threatening and there were a few sprinkles,
we had a great event at the field. Sikkema,
Wallen, Siebenrock, and White hosted more
than 60 Scouts and parents for a rocket
shoot. Civil Air Patrol attended and shot off
some ‘big birds.’ and there were some oohs
and ahhs when we flew a Stryker.
“The leaders and parents want to
advance the relationship with AAM and I
propose we plan some sort of event with
them down the road. We may want to do a
hot dog thing at the field and/or a
demonstration for them at their place to
elaborate on AAM and RC. We will
probably have some of the attendees show
up for training night and they seemed
excited at the prospect.”
This must be Mission Control.
Thanks Jim, and keep up the great
work!
That’s it for this month. Next month I’ll
share my trip to Wilson Lake for WOW,
the annual Wings Over Wilson Soaring
event.
Until then, have fun and keep in touch!
Mark.

District IX Volunteers Duane Grigsby was a
longtime Northern
Knights member.
North Dakota AVP Troy Lapp shared
how his club enjoys the long winter.
“The Missouri Slope Model Aero
Club hosted the first annual Flurry Fest
Indoor Fun-Fly in Bismarck February 3.
The event was
a success
despite the
extremely cold
weather. We
had 35 pilots
and plenty of
foamies and
electric
helicopters.
“The event
was held with
help from
Bismarck
Parks and
Recreation to
secure the
indoor golf
dome for use.
It is a true
indication of
how electric flight has revolutionized
the way we play in the north!
“Plans are underway for the second
annual event. The indoor flying site has
plenty of room for foamies and 400-
class helicopters.”
