AMA News: District V-2007/03

Tony Stillman, District V Vice President

It is cold up north, but it is getting busy already here in the south! I had planned to have four events, but several clubs dropped out, so we will host three AMA District V fly-ins in 2007. These events will be scattered throughout the year, and I am hopeful they will be tons of fun and a great time for all AMA members in District V.

District fly-ins

  • Azalea City Model Aviators — Mobile, Alabama
  • North Alabama Radio Control Club — near Huntsville, Alabama
  • Markham Park Pilots Association — Sunrise, Florida

I have just returned from the 2007 edition of the AMA Convention held each year at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, California. This year AMA held a true convention with nearly all of the AMA Executive Council members attending. That allowed each district vice president to attend the seminars, help with the operation of the convention, and be available to the general membership to field questions and discuss issues with the modelers in attendance.

The show was well attended by vendors as well as interested members of the modeling public. Many new products were introduced at the show; you will likely be seeing advertisements for many of them by the time you read this report.

We were able to feature our new AMA Executive Director, Jim Cherry, during the event. Jim made himself available to discuss issues with the membership and took time to visit the vendors displaying at the show and get acquainted with them.

Executive Council meeting

On Monday, January 15, following the show, we held our first Executive Council meeting of 2007. Dr. Sandy Frank was recognized for his nine years of service as the District VIII Vice President. Sandy decided to bow out as a member of the Executive Council and did not run for re-election last year; I respect his decision. Taking Sandy's place is Jim Rice. I am already impressed with Jim's attitude and desire to serve the members of his district. Welcome aboard, Jim!
