I HAVE just returned from the Southeastern
Modeler’s Show held annually in Perry,
Georgia. This year was another record-setting
year for the Georgia Aircraft Modelers
Association (GAMA) club.
The huge swap meet has grown to boast
more than 1,000 swap tables in use—and that
does not include the very large number of
vendors who attend each year! Gauging by
the amount of models and equipment seen
leaving the building, I would say that the
show was quite a big success!
At this year’s event, AMA was well
represented. Our new Executive Director Jim
Cherry and his wife attended along with Staff
Director Joyce Hager. Rich LaGrange
worked the AMA booth all weekend with
AMA Vice President (VP) Dave Mathewson
and his wife Ginger, and District IV VP Bliss
Teague.
I appreciate them attending the event and
helping members learn more about AMA.
Also at the show were Associate Vice
Presidents (AVPs) Owen Maupin, Freddie
McClellan, Bob Dixon, and Roger Marshall,
along with District V Safety Coordinator Red
Scholefield.
On Saturday we held a District V AMA
meeting. Jim addressed the group and Dave
Mathewson gave a presentation on many of
the new programs and changes that are
underway. I encourage everyone to visit the
AMA Web site to learn more about these
new programs, especially the new Take off
And Grow (TAG) program.
AVP Doug Jones sent this report from the
Markham Park Pilots Association Night Fly.
“The Markham Park Pilots Association
held its first night fly of the year at
Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida, on
February 20, 2007. Doug Jones was the CD
for the event. The weather cooperated and
the bugs were few.
“Twenty-one pilots participated in the
event, and approximately 300 spectators
watched the fun and shared in the
excitement. There was a nice assortment of
blinking lights, helicopters with lit blades,
and cyalume-decorated trainers.
“It wasn’t long before gravity claimed its
first aircraft victim of the night, and this
casualty certainly wasn’t the last. For those
who survived the night, awards were given
to Jonathan Perdue for Best Night
Performing Aircraft, Robert Rich for Best
Lit Aircraft, and David Reyes for Best
Creative Display.
“Pizza and drinks were available and a
raffle was held. Raffle winners walked away
with some great prizes provided by local
hobby stores and vendors. The one question
often heard was ‘when can we do this again?’
“The photos are courtesy of Jennifer
Jones.”
Lindwell Bradley holds the remainder of his
Sky Raider.
The Best Night Performing Aircraft award
belonged to Jonathan Perdue.
The Best Lit Aircraft was Robert Rich’s.
David Reyes won the Best Creative Display
award.
