AMA News District V - 2007/10

Our third District V Jamboree was held June 22–24 in South Florida. Doug Jones, our Associate Vice President (AVP) from the area, reported on the event.

AVP's note

It has been a busy summer! I am very pleased to announce that I was married on June 30 to a wonderful lady, Genie. I have moved to Brunswick, Georgia, and opened a second Radio South R/C Service Center there. Genie has a 12-year-old son, Blake, and I hope he will get into R/C flying with me!

I was unable to attend because of illness, but the event went well. I have heard only great things about Doug and the Markham Park Pilots Association’s hard work in making this event happen. Thanks, Doug!

Doug Jones — Jamboree report

I am proud to announce that the District V Jamboree, hosted by the Markham Park Pilots Association, was a grand success! The three-day event was blessed with sunny—although very hot—skies. There had been threats of rain, but the anti-rain dance I did in my living room worked!

  • Attendance
  • More than 110 pilots registered.
  • Spectators numbered more than 1,000.
  • Support and volunteers
  • Other clubs at the field—the 332nd Redtails and the Broward County Radio Control Association—provided helpers.
  • The Coral Springs Civil Air Patrol Squadron provided cadets to assist with parking logistics. Their help was greatly appreciated.
  • Aircraft and demonstrations
  • More than 30 turbine jets graced the field, along with a 12-foot DC-10, which was a real crowd pleaser.
  • There were so many aircraft types that I can’t list them all.
  • On Saturday we had a noon show that included Combat, warbird, and 3-D demonstrations. The warbird demonstration was provided by the Palm Beach Radio Control Association.
  • To top it off, we had a full-scale Russian World War II Yak, a Lancair, and an Aerocoupe do several low flybys. They were definite crowd pleasers.

The free shirts provided by the AMA were greatly appreciated, as was the free barbecue for AMA members. They made AMA members feel as if they were getting something for their money and were greatly appreciated by all.

We held a daily raffle that was also a success thanks to fantastic donations from the following companies:

  • Futaba
  • Castle Creations
  • Great Planes
  • Southeast R/C Hobbies
  • Warrick’s Hobbies
  • R/C Hobbies
  • E3 Enterprises
  • CPC Caps

Without Tony Stillman’s help this event would not have happened. On behalf of myself, the Markham Park Pilots Association, and all participating AMA members, thank you, Tony!
