AMA News: District V - 2008/01

As winter sets in, the activity in District V moves to the Sunshine State (Florida). Many great events occur here between November and March, and I plan to make it down to see several of them! I hope to see you there!

I have a couple of reports to share this month. The first is from Dick Tonan, District V associate vice president in Tennessee.

Columbia RC Flying Modelers annual fly-in (report by Dick Tonan)

On October 13–14, 2007, the friendly members of the Columbia RC Flying Modelers (CRCFM) hosted their annual fly-in. Whoever picked this date deserves a medal — the weather couldn't have been better. Clear blue skies, bright sun, gentle breezes, and moderate temperatures made this an ideal flying weekend.

  • Roughly 35 pilots took advantage of the near-perfect conditions and enjoyed the club members' warm hospitality.
  • Models flown ranged in size from small electric park flyers to 50% aerobatic models.
  • There was a wide variety of flying styles, from wild 3‑D aerobatics to stately scale flight routines.
  • The speed range was impressive as well — from slow Cubs to screaming turbine aircraft.

There was something for everyone. Hopefully, the club will host another fly-in next year — you won't want to miss it if they do!

Middle Point R/C Flyers annual fly-in and Toys for Tots fundraiser (report by Matt McKnight)

The Middle Point R/C Flyers of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, held its fifth annual Mid‑America Fly‑In and Fun Scale Classic Contest September 15–16 at the club's flying field. Twenty-eight pilots entered the event, hailing from Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Several hundred spectators visited the field during the two days of flying.

  • The club raised $250 in donations for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots.
  • The weather was perfect for flying. Three flightlines were in operation.
