Lots of clear blue sky, mostly light winds, and
light-jacket temperatures make for a perfect
day at the Flying Griffins flying site.
THE FLYING GRIFFINS (www.flying
griffins.org) hosted a Toys For Tots
(www.toysfortots.org) fundraiser on
November 8, 2008. The event enjoyed
nearly perfect weather: cool enough for a
jacket, a couple of small, wispy clouds, and
light winds that were generally modelfriendly.
Well, make that a nearly perfect day. Bill
Borow (L) and Billy Moore puzzle out a fuelfeed
problem on Bill’s new Giant Stinger.
“Stupid engine. That’s the tank vent line
you’re trying to pull fuel from !”
Although they are hard to see, it appeared
that a local general aviation airport was
having a fly-in of its own. The Toys For Tots
attendees were treated to a flight of four
Boeing-Stearman Model 75s (PT-17/N2S) in
Navy colors that orbited the model flying
site while forming up. No mistaking the
sound of four radial engines droning around
in lazy circles overhead!
Although the turnout for the Flying
Griffins Toys For Tots event could have
been better, the event raised more than $400
for the charity. Not bad at all, for a doublehandful
of club members just having fun on
a near-perfect autumn day.
The North Atlanta Soaring Association
(www.atlantasoaring.org/DNN/) hosted the
2008 Mid-South Soaring Championships the
weekend of May 23, 2008, at the Scott
Hudgens Park flying site in Duluth, Georgia.

Calvin State handled the scoring chores. The
weather was unusually hot, bright, and dry,
forcing Calvin to erect a shade over the
scoring computer just to see the screen.
With five high-start lines in operation, line
retrieval was an all-day job. Olivia Schlabra
and Julie Bullinger, doused in liberal amounts
of sunblock, operated one of the line
retrieval carts.
The event drew contestants from across the

US. Twelveyear-
