AMA News District V - 2009/06

With spring in full swing, a new flying season is upon us.

Weak Signals Toledo R/C Expo

I just returned from the Weak Signals Toledo R/C Expo. Attendance seemed to be pretty good — there were lots of things to see and purchase, and people were taking advantage of both.

Electronic Technology Committee meeting

I attended an Electronic Technology Committee meeting held on Sunday during the show. We had plenty to discuss, and 2.4 GHz spread spectrum was the hot topic.

While you may not read much about these kinds of meetings, be assured that your AMA is working to protect our freedom to fly our models. This includes work on:

  • Electronics issues
  • Homeland Security issues
  • FAA concerns
  • FCC concerns

Lake City, South Carolina Fly-In

The Lake City Fly-In was held April 11, 2009. I drove up to visit with the club members of the Lake City Flying Tigers.

There were some overnight rains, but the day dawned with blue skies and a bit of wind. Although the event was the day before Easter, roughly 50 pilots registered for the fly-in.

The Flying Tigers have a great flying site. It features a full-scale grass runway of approximately 2,000 feet, with the flight line set in the middle of the field. The club has also built a helipad with a covered pit area on the back side of the field so helicopter pilots have their own spot to fly. It’s a really nice setup, and everyone at the field makes you feel very welcome.

The club holds an event in the fall as well, and I hope to make it back for that.
