Hernando County Radio Control Club mall show
I want to share some news and pictures from the Hernando County Radio Control Club in Spring Hill, Florida.
In the interest of a membership drive, on December 12–13 the club set up and displayed a few good-looking models at the local Towne Square Mall to attract new members. The photos show the airplanes and some of the club members who helped out. We talked about RC flying, the AMA, our club and rules, and the fees that accompany this sport.
The biggest interest was in a flight simulator set up by Keith Knowlton. This drew more interest from the youngsters than from the parents, but the parents got the message that kids are interested in model airplane flying, and not just the video games they have at home.
The outcome was: one candidate for membership presented his check at the show, and two more did the same the following week. Overall, we claim a successful mall show.

Call for Associate Vice Presidents (AVPs)
As we begin 2010, I need your help. Although I have quite a few associate vice presidents (AVPs), I am short in several areas. I am desperate to find an AMA Leader Member who would like to assist the AMA and District V as an AVP.
I don't have any AVPs for the entire state of Alabama, and I also need at least one AVP for central/northern Mississippi and one for western Tennessee.
An AVP's role:
- Be an active AMA member who attends events in the local area and as much as 100 miles away.
- Become the "face" of AMA for the local clubs and members in your area.
- Help educate AMA members and clubs on what AMA does and what it has to offer.
I will provide all the information and assistance to help you accomplish this task. I am looking for someone energetic and upbeat about AMA and model flying. Interested? Contact me:

Condolences and leadership updates
I was very saddened to learn of the passing of AMA District X Vice President Jim Giffin. He had been suffering from a breathing problem for as long as I have known him.
Jim brought good ideas and the perspective of a veteran modeler to the AMA Executive Council (EC). He believed in improving modeling for the AMA membership and especially for members in his district. Jim was a very dedicated EC member and spent several meetings participating via telephone for well over eight hours at a time. He will truly be missed by those of us on the AMA Executive Council. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.
As part of normal EC procedures, each vice president names a successor should he or she pass away while in office. Jim had named Michael Brown as his replacement. Mike sat in for Jim a couple of times while Jim was ill, and I think Mike will do a good job. Although I am still getting to know him, I know he has the best interests of AMA and the membership at heart and will do his best to represent the members of his district. Welcome aboard, Mike!
As per its bylaws, the AMA will be conducting a special election to fill the position of District XI vice president as part of the normal elections to be held this coming fall.
