HELLO DISTRICT V!
We have a little nugget in the
Caribbean called Puerto Rico. If you have
ever been, you know about its beauty and
beaches, but did you know that there is
also a strong aeromodeling community on
the island?
We are working closely with the AVPs
on the island to bring all aeromodelers upto-
date on AMA issues. We have Edwin O.
Medina, a professional pilot, and Juan
Cortez, an A&P aircraft mechanic, as reps
on the island. Recently, they have
approached many aeromodeling clubs on
the island to get them up to speed on AMA
issues and benefits, and the response has
been awesome.
One of the biggest movers and shakers
on the island is also the president of the
Caguas RC Airplane Club Inc., Leonel
Albino. He has kept the hobby in the
spotlight with some extraordinary events,
including managing Team Puerto Rico at
the Extreme Flight Championships (XFC).
Leonel is an asset to modeling everywhere.
If you do a search on the AMA website for
clubs on the island, you’ll have no problem
finding one to visit when you are on
vacation.
I attended the inaugural all-electric funfly
at the Daytona Beach Radio Control
Association and what an event it was. I
was impressed with the field. It has a good
layout, is clean, and the pole barn is
awesome. The grass in the pit area was
good enough for a world-class putter, and
the food—delicious!
The club’s president, Lou Rovegno,
vice president, Terry Gulczynski,
secretary, Herb Cain, and many others
made my stay a welcome one. There was
even a simulator set up to give the
spectators a chance to fly. I witnessed kids
line up for a go at the simulator. What a
wonderful way to introduce new folks to
the hobby.
The club has approached me about
having a District V Jamboree at this
venue.
