AMA News: District V-2011/12

Hello District V!

We have a little nugget in the Caribbean called Puerto Rico. If you have ever been, you know about its beauty and beaches, but did you know there is also a strong aeromodeling community on the island?

We are working closely with the AVPs on the island to bring all aeromodelers up to date on AMA issues. Our representatives on the island are:

  • Edwin O. Medina — professional pilot
  • Juan Cortez — A&P aircraft mechanic

They have recently contacted many aeromodeling clubs across the island to bring them up to speed on AMA issues and benefits, and the response has been excellent.

One of the biggest movers and shakers on the island is Leonel Albino, president of the Caguas RC Airplane Club Inc. He has kept the hobby in the spotlight with some extraordinary events, including managing Team Puerto Rico at the Extreme Flight Championships (XFC). Leonel is an asset to modeling everywhere. If you search the AMA website for clubs on the island, you'll have no problem finding one to visit when you are on vacation.

Daytona Beach Electric Fun-Fly

I attended the inaugural all-electric fun-fly at the Daytona Beach Radio Control Association, and what an event it was. The field has a great layout, is well kept, and the pole barn is impressive. The grass in the pit area was good enough for a world-class putter, and the food was delicious.

The club officers who welcomed me included:

  • Lou Rovegno — president
  • Terry Gulczynski — vice president
  • Herb Cain — secretary
  • and many others who made my stay very enjoyable

There was even a simulator set up to give spectators a chance to fly. I watched kids line up for turns on the simulator — a wonderful way to introduce new folks to the hobby.

The club has approached me about hosting a District V Jamboree at this venue.
