AMA News: District V-2012/11

Author: Jose Soto

Edition: Model Aviation - 2012/11
Page Numbers: 140

Hello District V!
We are getting to the end of another
year and for most of us, it has been
good flying with little hurricane
activity. Some of our modelers in the
Florida panhandle, Mississippi, and
Alabama had foul weather associated
with Hurricane Isaac and the tropical
storm that
scared all of
us again, but
did not cause
extensive
damage.
I would
like to discuss
CL flying.
Although
it is not a
dominant
part of
aeromodeling
today, it is
however,
for most of
us, the place
where we got
started.
This
November,
I will
congregate
with many
like-minded
individuals
to sponsor a
race in Starke,
Florida.
This event,
hosted by the
Jacksonville Flying Rebels, is proving
to be a huge, fun event and, for those
of you who have never been to a CL
racing event, I urge you to come out. I
am going to be there, so if you have any
questions for me, come on out, have
lunch with me, watch some racing, and
make a weekend of it. Hope to see you
there!
For more information and a map
please contact Mike Schmieder at
[email protected] or me at amajose@

I have been visiting many of you—some
announced, some unannounced—if
I am in the area at the time, and I
have to thank all of you that I have
seen in District V for your hospitality,
attention, great club running, and
representing this hobby.
I do ask you, however, to keep a tight
ship when it comes to safety issues. I
have fielded many calls about safety and
some are alarming. If you see or have
in your club anyone being lackadaisical
about safety, bring them to a board
meeting and request an explanation for
their actions. Don’t turn a blind eye; it
can cost you your field! We lost a field
this year because of a safety violation,
yes, one violation and the field closed.
It’s sad but true. Keep an eye open!
We are having a huge aerotow event
March 15-17, 2013, at the Indian River
Kontrol Society club field in Cocoa,
Florida. This is the second annual
Spacecoast Aero Tow and it will be a
great one. Get a Sailplane or a tug ready
for this one! More information is at
www.irks.org.
Be in touch soon, Joser.
