AMA News - District V Report

Edition: Model Aviation - 2002/10
Page Numbers: 163

OUR DISTRICT V Club of Ihc Month for July is the Top Gun RC Club in Goldmine GA. One puipose of the elub is to help others. The club has just concluded hosting its third annual Cancer Benefit Fly-in at its flying field. Many fliers from all over Georgia showed up to participate. The club provided free food and drinks for all the fliers and spectators. The club's president, John Lane, told me the puipose of the Top Gun RC Club is to do good for the neighborhood and while having fun. President Lane's admissions arc not just empty words. Consider this: the proceeds of the Cancer Benefit affair go to the American Cancer Society—this year it was $1,705. The club also conducts annual flying demonstrations for Boy Scouts with the public invited. The club involves itself in an annual mall show where children ages nine to 15 hold a drawing. The winner receives a model kit, a radio, and free lessons to fly. The elub conducts a Flying for Tots affair where the landing fee is a new toy, and at Christmas all club members ring doorbells in Hart County, collect funds, and give the money to the Salvation Army. John Lane has been club president for six years, his brother Jim Lane, club vice president (VP) for six years, and Charles Lane has been secretary/treasurer for six years. Sort of a family affair. , : For the Top Gun RC Club's helping and encouraging young people to fly and for its involvement in community affairs, it is our District V Club of the Month. A framed plaque is being mailed to the president. This snap above includes Contest Director (CD) Bob Laine (right in the middle); David Barnes; club president John Lane; T.C. Carter; VP Jim Lane; Ronnie Bray; secretary/treasurer Chuck Lane; Stan Harrison; Tony Baker; and Mervin Lane. In this picture above, four important helicopter fliers posing in front of a Hirobo model on the table. They are Dan Willis, Bruce Eddy, Terry Thomas, and Mitch Davis. I attended the Huntsville AL Rocket City RC (RCRC) June Fun-fly at their Trey Wilbourn field. Wayne Gladden and Chuck Facemire CDed the event. Meet Jim Lyle from Winder GA; Eddie King from Bogart GA; and Horace Harwell from the Scenic RC Flyers in Athens. Meet Sherwin Arculis, the publicity chair for RCRC club, Wayne Gladden, CD, Dale Wasserman, one of the officials, Warren Tomme, club president, and Mary Long, who was helping. These nice people above include CD Bob Lain, his wife Neil, sister-in-law Juanita Lane, and Jessica. I attended the Music City Helicopter Championships in Nashville. The contest for events 431, 432, 433. and 434 was very well run by CD Tim Diperi. Tim had perfect control of the affair. In this snap above, CD Tim Diperi is on the right. Also shown are Robert and Sharon Hughes. Sharon was the official scorekeeper for the contest. In the background you can see some of the five judges sitting in a line along the flightline, judging the affair. Some of today's helicopters are very well engineered, just like the full-scale ones, and can cost several thousand dollars. Today, they are very maneuverable. Modelers can easily fly them inverted, turn, and hover like real ones. A fun-fly is a fun-fly, just what the name suggests. People sit around enjoying each other's company and fly when they take a notion. Here above, Toby Ivey, foreground, with his airplane getting ready to fly. In the background sitting around are Marchal Warden, Tennis McCarley, Mary Long, and Rick Hall, club secretary of the RCRC club. You can see plenty more pictures in color of the Goldmine GA Top Gun RC club, the Music City Helicopter fliers, sponsored by Hobby Town USA, and the Huntsville RCRC club, on your District Web site. www.modelair.org/. Plenty more pix. You might see yourself. ... .. ., ....-- Associate VP Nancy Riley lives in Lake Placid FL. She has her own page on our District Web site. She contributes pictures all the time.
