SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI: Club #
1987, the Tri-Lakes RC Flying Club, did
something a little different and it turned out
to be a great day for the club members and
the audience.
Last year seven members of the club
visited the Tablerock Healthcare and
Retirement Center. Club members attending
included John Woods, Howard Shire, Dave
Medley, Gene Fuson, Fritz Corbin, and Jack
and Annette McAvoy.
A static display featuring various types of
aircraft was shown. John Woods gave the
audience a brief introduction and explanation
of how RC models are controlled. Each of
the attending members then gave a short talk
about their aircraft that included size, weight,
numbers of controls, and the power of the
motor or engine.
Each also spoke about how they had
gotten into the hobby and how long they had
been flying models.
Several of the members of the audience
were able to participate with stories of their
own experiences flying full-scale aircraft in
their younger days. Among the more
interesting stories was one woman who
ferried fighters during World War II, a man
who had flown 17 different aircraft types,
and one woman who had a barnstorming
brother and had flown a Tri-Motor herself.
Pictures and information were supplied
by Jack McEvoy.
Howard Shire and John Woods speak about
RC flying.
The residents admire John Woods’ GeeBee.
Gene Fuson compares a wing-under
construction with Fritz Corbin’s finished
model.
A couple of fighter pilots compare notes. This
92-year-old woman ferried P-51s and F4Us
during World War II. Dave Medley flew F-84
and F-86 jets.
Jack McEvoy talks about his and wife
Annette’s Decathlon.
The woman in the wheel chair is telling
Howard Shire and Jack McEvoy how she flew a
Ford Tri-Motor and helped her brother who
was a barnstormer.
Dave Medley, with John Woods’ help,
demonstrated some of the details about his
Corsair.
Jack McEvoy answered questions from the
audience.
