AHH, SPRING, “when a young man’s
fancy turns to thoughts of …” whatever a
young man’s fancy turns to. For me it’s a
start to another new flying season and an
opportunity to get out to visit flying sites
and the District VII membership.
It also is the Toledo Expo which is April
13-15 this year. Toledo is the Mecca of the
modeling world where all the new airplanes,
engines, and things we just can’t do without
will be shown.
Of course I’ll be there as well as a
contingency from AMA signing up new
members and showing what’s available from
AMA’s supply and service department and
the custom printing department.
If your club is looking to have its logo
printed on hats or shirts you might want to
check out what is offered. They do a great
job and are competitively priced as well.
This past January, AMA held its annual
convention and the first Executive Council
meeting of the year in Ontario, California. I
hope this will be a continuing agenda.
Needless to say, the show was a success
and appears to be growing with each passing
year. It’s a tribute to all the hard-working
AMA staff that put this convention together
and the vendors who exhibit.
During my tour of the exhibits, it was
quite evident there was a lack of airplane
kits—the kind a fellow actually has to put
together using glue. What I saw were ARFs
and a few almost-ready-to-cover (ARC) kits.
I was impressed with the quality of the
airplanes and the new improvements in the
electric-powered aircraft with motors and
battery technology that keeps on improving.
This brings up a safety point. You men
and women who fly electric must pay
attention to the charger and battery
manufacturers’ instructions.
Safety is no accident; please make sure
you know the correct way to charge those
packs using the proper charger. A fire
extinguisher isn’t bad to have close by
either.
Here are a few pictures of the convention.

A number of staff and volunteers worked at
the AMA booth.
Attendees at the electric seminar.
Many new ARFs were on display in the
vendors’ booths.
Till next time, Have fun, fly safely, and take
a youngster to the field. C.A.V.U.
Two hours after the AMA Convention 2007 opened there was still a block-long line to get
into the convention center.
