AMA News: District VII - 2007/04
Spring, flying season, and the Toledo Expo
Ah, spring — when a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of ... whatever a young man's fancy turns to. For me it's the start of another flying season and an opportunity to visit flying sites and District VII members. It also means the Toledo Expo, which is April 13–15 this year. Toledo is the Mecca of the modeling world where all the new airplanes, engines, and gadgets we can't do without are shown.
Of course I'll be there, along with an AMA contingency signing up new members and showing what's available from AMA's Supply & Service Department and the Custom Printing Department. If your club is looking to have its logo printed on hats or shirts, you might want to check out what is offered. They do a great job and are competitively priced.
Annual convention and exhibits
This past January, AMA held its annual convention and the first Executive Council meeting of the year in Ontario, California. I hope this will become a continuing tradition. Needless to say, the show was a success and appears to be growing each year. It's a tribute to the hard-working AMA staff who put the convention together and to the vendors who exhibit.
During my tour of the exhibits, it was evident there was a lack of traditional airplane kits — the kind you actually have to build with glue. What I saw were mostly ARFs and a few almost-ready-to-cover (ARC) kits.
I was impressed with the quality of the airplanes and the improvements in electric-powered aircraft; motors and battery technology keep getting better.
Safety reminder
This brings up a safety point: those who fly electric must pay attention to charger and battery manufacturers' instructions. Safety is no accident — make sure you know the correct way to charge packs and use the proper charger. A fire extinguisher nearby is not a bad idea.
Till next time, have fun, fly safely, and take a youngster to the field.
