AMA News District VII - 2007/05
In Memoriam: Thomas Douglas Lazar
During my tenure as an AMA district vice president I’ve had much fun gathering information for the columns. Taking pictures and speaking with the membership at various events is enjoyable, but this time I have to write about something to which no one looks forward.
Sadly, I have to report that District VII has lost one of its longest-tenured associate vice presidents. On February 25, 2007, Thomas Douglas Lazar passed away and was laid to rest on March 3. Tom suffered a stroke and never recovered.
Tom was involved in many clubs and activities:
- Member and past president of the Madison Area Radio Control Society (MARCS)
- Member of the Screaming Eagles
- Member of the R/C Club of Watertown
- Member of the War Birds
He is survived by his mother, one brother, and four sisters.
Tom and I shared many interests other than aeromodeling. We were avid photographers, archery enthusiasts, full-scale pilots, and members of the Civil Air Patrol (Tom outranked me). Tom’s passion for the hobby sport showed in many areas, and there will be a void left by his passing. I am sure those who knew Tom will join me in offering our thoughts and prayers to his mother and family.
C.A.V.U., Tom.
Electric Flying
For you electric guys out there who say you never see anything in my column about electric aeromodeling, this is for you. This is more proof that electric flying has come a long way in just a few years.
Not too long ago battery power was Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), then Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). Now it is lithium power. Long gone are the heavy C, sub-C, and AA battery packs.
Plenny Bates CD'ed the Cedar Rapids Sky Hawks electric fun-fly and sent in these pictures. I hope this will be just the start of seeing more of what is going on in clubs that have electric modelers and events. Let’s see what clubs are doing this summer.
Closing
Until next time, C.A.V.U. Fly safely, have fun, and take a youngster to the flying site.
Tom.
