IT APPEARS my request for club and
community inter action is starting to pay
off. The Manitwo Flyers Ltd. of Two
Rivers, Wisconsin, was able to partner
with the local community action program,
the Lakeshore C.A.P.
A group of eight community
youngsters, ages 10-14, combined with
members of the Manitwo Flyers made up
the Point Program III. The program is
designed to expose at-risk youth to
positive, practical experiences and
development of skills that would assist
them in everyday life.
The program was to build eight RC
aircraft during a 13-week period. The group
met for two hours each week. The airplanes
and engines were donated by club members
and members of the community.
Upon completion of the building phase,
the youngsters joined AMA and then
started their introduction to flying at the
local Manitwo field using the buddy box
system. After learning how to fly, all the
airplanes were given to the kids who built
them in order to continue enjoying the
aeromodeling hobby.
Gene Pagel, secretary of the Manitwo
Flyers, submitted the article and pictures. I
apologize that there aren’t captions.
Don Veres II of the Radio Control Club of
Detroit (RCCD) sent in these pictures
showing some of the youngsters who
attended one of the many kids nights set up
at the club field. The club furnishes each
one with a AMA Delta Dart and the
members help with the construction.
RCCD is one of the Michigan clubs that
get very involved with the local youth in
various programs through out the year.
Below are pictures from some of the
RCCD building and flying sessions
throughout the season.
This is only a sampling of what can be
done in order to introduce young people to
aeromodeling. As I’ve mentioned before in
these columns, the future of aeromodeling
is the current crop of youngsters. It is our
duty to encourage more clubs to get
involved.
Till next time, fly safely, have fun, and
get involved. C.A.V.U.
