AMA News District VII - 2009/04

Let me begin this column with a thank-you to the District VII membership for the vote of confidence in the recent election. As I have stated in the past, I will continue to serve the Academy and its membership to the best of my ability.

Many people think the AMA is all about RC (radio control). If you look at the numbers indicated as main interest, it might appear that way, but it is not.

Control Line (CL)

As we know, there are other venues and one of those is control line (CL), and that is what this column will feature. I started with CL in 1949 — holy cow! I didn't realize it had been that long ago!

One nice thing about CL is that it doesn't require a lot of space to fly. Generally we use 60-foot lines, so a diameter of about 120 feet is required plus sufficient distance as a safety margin.

There are five categories of CL flying:

  • Speed
  • Carrier
  • Racing
  • Aerobatics
  • Combat

There are also different types within the five listed. I won't go into the technical aspects of CL in this column simply because of space constraints. There are other features in MA that go into more detail.

I've included some pictures to give you an idea of another modeling area to investigate, especially if you are confronted with the thought of not having enough space to fly RC.

See you at the circle! Remember, the future of aeromodeling is in our hands now. Introduce someone to our hobby.

Fly safely and have fun.
