AMA News District VII - 2009/05

Sanctions

It is time to remind people not to send your sanction requests to me. Occasionally I receive a few and then I have to forward the request to the proper contest coordinator. This is where time is lost in getting the sanction.

For those who are new to getting a sanction, it's really quite simple. There is a page toward the back of AMA's Model Aviation magazine that lists all of the contest coordinators and their addresses. Fill out your form and send it to the person listed for the type of event.

Club News and Events

I wish to thank all of the club newsletter editors for sending me a copy of their newsletters. Yes, I do read each one. I know that a large number of clubs have their own websites as well, which is fine for posting pictures and news for their members.

Often a club will hold an event that other members might find interesting. I'm asking that when a club holds an event, share it with all of us through this column. Send me copies of the pictures along with a brief description of the event. It will only take a few minutes to copy a CD. Don't worry about the writing; our publications staff can handle that — we have the greatest staff.

There are 250 clubs in District VII. Why not share your club's events with all of us? As much as our associate vice presidents and I would like to attend all of the events, it is almost impossible to cover them because of our relatively short flying season. Whether it is a CL event, FF, RC, helicopters, or any other aircraft, send it in! It will be entertaining to share.

Pre-season Preparation and Safety

By now all of your winter projects should be finished except for some minor touch-ups here and there.

This is also the time to make sure that your flight equipment is checked out, batteries charged, engines tuned, and winches and lines all ready to go. There is nothing worse than arriving at the field only to find something is amiss. That can really spoil a day quickly.

  • Check flight equipment
  • Charge batteries
  • Tune engines
  • Inspect winches and lines

Above all, safety is the word of the day — not just for you and your flying buddies, but also for any possible spectator who might show up.

Final Thoughts

As I write this column the temperature has dropped another 2°. It's down to a balmy 12° above zero on the second day of March. I don't know about the rest of you in District VII, but I've had enough of snow and cold. Where are you, spring?

Till the next time, see you at the field. Introduce someone to our hobby and get involved. Remember, someone once took the time to show you how. Safety is no accident.
