District VII

At one time I enjoyed winter as much as anyone, with skiing, skating, and even flying a model on occasion. Those days are no longer for me because of frostbitten fingers, but there are some hearty souls who take winter activities very seriously, as noted in the following reports.

St. Croix Valley R/C Club (Osceola, Wisconsin)

Carter Johnson reported that a temperature of 11 below zero didn't deter two aspiring young helicopter pilots on January 2, 2010. Shown in the pictures are 11-year-old Ethan Lundsted showing three-year-old Kellen Johnson how to fly a micro coaxial helicopter during the St. Croix Valley freeze fly. Photos by Carter Johnson.

Owatonna R/C Modelers (Owatonna, Minnesota)

Dick Baumer, vice president of the Owatonna R/C Modelers, reported on the club's Frozen Fingers Fly-In held January 1. With temperatures at -6°, he notes that's cold no matter how sunny it is. The property owner's daughter cleared the road with a farm tractor to help the club get to the site. Everyone flew their airplanes, but not for long. Hot chili awaited all.

I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the tale.
