AMA News - District VII Report

Edition: Model Aviation - 2002/10
Page Numbers: 165

IN THE PAST few months 1 have received many requests for information relating to the location of clubs and such. It appears that some of our members are not aware of the AMA Web site. There is an ongoing focus to present just about any kind of information one might need. Much hard work has gone into this service and it should be used to its fullest. For those who may need the address, it is www.modelaircraft.org. I suggest you visit the site. I'm sure you will be impressed. Another item I mention often is that I am always in search of material for this column. 1 ask those of you who read this column to have your club newsletter person please send me information and photos about what your club is doing. I'm sure other clubs would be interested. The following reports are just an example of what I mean. You don't have to be John Steinbeck to write. And don't worry about the spelling—except for people's names. Ken Sulkowski of the Radio Control Club of Detroit submitted the following. For the past three years the club has held a special lunch break session during their fun-flys. The club gives each youngster present a sheet of paper and they are told to make a paper airplane. They enlist the parents, of course, to help. On completion of the airplane, a race is held for the airplanes, with the first-place winner receiving a large foam glider. To ensure no one is disappointed, every youngster is given a balsa glider. What a great way to introduce youngsters to our hobby! After the festivities were completed and everyone had lunch, the club members handed each youngster a balsa glider to take with them. Assisting in all this were E. Landon, Carol Georgesquc, S. Grey, S. Blake, and R. Thompson. No one could tell who had the most fun throughout the whole time, the grownups (kids at heart) or the kids. Club members this is what it's all about. What better way to introduce our hobby and be able to share it with others? This is the type of thing that will only help to educate and promote our hobby. The race is on! Jack DeLisle submits another report. The River District RC Eagles Club invites a class from a local school for a flying demonstration. In this case it was the first graders of the Eddy Elementary school along with their teachers Mrs. Macintosh, Mrs. Harris. Ms. Anderson, and Mrs. Carrell. The Eagles get together and put on an aerobatic flying demonstration with fixed-wing airplanes, a helicopter, and even the ever-popular flying lawnmower. During the breaks in flying, the members answered all questions. There were even four of the ever-popular candy drops. .. " •••; Club members who participated included J. DeLisle, T. Nichols, G. Wilkerson, Kammer, P. Fleckstein, D. Waldecker. A. Fournier, and C. Jones who flew the chopper. Tom Gall was the announcer.
