One-Eighth Air Force Club — Scale Fly-in (Oct. 28–29)
Howard Kennedy, commander of the One-Eighth Air Force Club, reported on the club’s Scale Fly-in held October 28–29 at Superstition Airpark in Mesa, Arizona, home of the Arizona Model Aviators.
Activities started Friday evening with a hospitality hour for early arrivals and the setup crew. The menu included pizza, wings, and refreshments.
Saturday was breezy but flyable. At noon the airplanes were lined on the runway centerline for the public to view the scale models. After the aircraft were cleared from the runway, three trainer aircraft with buddy boxes were launched for anyone who wanted to try RC flying—mostly the kids.
Sunday’s weather was much nicer: no wind, overcast, and ideal temperatures. Several airplanes were in the air at all times. The semiannual event drew 71 registered pilots and more than 100 scale aircraft. A raffle held Sunday afternoon awarded roughly $2,000 worth of donated merchandise. Following the raffle, awards were presented to winners in various event categories.
At each fly-in the club presents a Young Eagles award. The winners for this event were:
- Ren Solomon (California)
- Alexander Vidales (Phoenix, Arizona)
Photos of the Young Eagles receiving their awards were provided by Val Roquini of Phoenix. The complete award list and more pictures are available on the club Web site: www.oneeighthairforce.org
Kona R/C Flyers — Old Airport runway
The Kona R/C Flyers meet each Thursday and Sunday at what West Hawaii residents call the Old Airport. At the end of the mile-long abandoned runway, a new 50-by-300-foot runway was paved.
The $11,000 cost was covered by club donations; a paving company was hired, and the new runway was ready for action in mid-2005. The club has grown to more than 40 members, up from only a handful 25 years ago.
