Barry Young of the Victor Valley RC Flyers
in Apple Valley, California, sent this report
about the Victor Valley RC Flyers Student
Program.
“The Victor Valley RC Flyers (VVRCF)
has presented aviation classes in local
elementary schools in the past and has just
completed the first class given at Eagle
Ranch Elementary School. The fifth-grade
class was held twice a week for 6 weeks
where 10 students learned what makes an
airplane fly and what makes a two-cycle
engine work.
“Teamwork is always encouraged. The
students held paper airplane contests and two
students won an RC aircraft: one for the
longest distance (84 feet, 6 inches) and one
for the longest duration of flight (4.2
seconds).
“Each student in the class built a GWS
Slow Stick. With the help of a club member
assisting with the class, the students also
restored a Senior Telemaster to flyable
condition. At the end of the sessions all of the
students were invited to the VVRCF field to
fly their Slow Sticks and other trainers on
buddy boxes.
“Students exposed to the class often
realize how to apply math and reading and
we see their grades drastically improve.
Longest flight time with a paper airplane
winner: 4.2 seconds!

“VVRCF is hoping to put this program
into local parks and recreation departments to
get more of the community involved in the
hobby. We have also created a ‘Say No to
Drugs’ program that we present as an
assembly for the schools. Our slogan is
‘Don’t get high; Learn to fly.’
“The club has started construction of a
premier RC Fun Park. Our ‘Field of Dreams’
will be a place where families can come and
run RC airplanes, helicopters, and cars. This
site will become a center for the VVRCF to
work closer with the kids in an attempt to
keep them from gangs, violence, and drugs.
“We have several sponsors that help with
this program: Duralite Batteries, APC Props,
Castle Creations, Pacer Zap Glue, DW
Foamies, Hitec, House of Balsa, Team Flying
Cirkus members, and numerous individuals.”
