MIKE REUTER, of the South Lane R/C Modelers, Eugene OR, sent the following photos of the club's oldest member. Guy Oliver is 81 years young and was a Marine aviator and a Corsair driver in the South Pacific. Guy flew many missions and was knocked out of the air in a midair collision with another Corsair during a combat mission. '• ' •-* Guy's van sports a picture of a Corsair and his club's name. Now that's club spirit! SOUTH LANE R/C MODELERS-1670 A closeup of the van's artwork. The South Lane Modelers have two flying fields. One is a mile east of Creswell OR at an old landfill site that is now a county park, and the second field is four miles cast of Cottage Grove. This field is leased from a timber company. The club members arc primarily fun fliers according to Mike. Good plan, guys, having two fields. Mission Statement The Academy of Model Aeronautics is a world-class association of modelers organized for the purpose of promotion, development, education, and advancement of modeling activities. The Academy provides leadership, organization, competition, communication, protection, representation, recognition, education, and scientific/technical development to its members. Vision Statement We, the members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, are the pathway to the future of aeromodeling and are committed to making modeling the foremost sport/hobby in the world. This vision is accomplished through • Partnerships with its valued associates, the modeling industry, and governments; • A process of continuous improvement; • A commitment to leadership, quality, education, and scientific/technical development; and • A safe, enjoyable modeling environment. Guy after an unusual "landing." Guy misjudged the length of the runway and when he saw he was running out of room pulled full up elevator. The airplane managed to attach itself to the fence and was held there by its wheels. That's getting the third wire the hard way. June 21, 22, and 23 found a gathering of large models at Gary Weaver's field at Odessa WA. Gary has developed a great site with a large grass field and unobstructed approaches. The event was very well attended with fliers from as far away as Sandpoint ID. There were roughly thirty fliers and more than double that number of aircraft. One would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite from this array of big aircraft. Gary Weaver with his Aerotech P-47. It has some of the nicest details I have seen, and is a great flier with a Zenoah G-62. Mark Ewert, of College Place WA, at Weaver International Airport with his Byron P-51 powered by a Quadra 40. Thanks, Gary, for a great weekend. Many of us will be looking forward to the next one. Things will get better—despite our efforts to improve them.
