A sport model with a "can-do" attitude!

The ubiquitous Ugly Stik spawned a whole generation of similar models, all of which had one thing in common: a "can-do" attitude. These utilitarian aircraft seemed adaptable to almost any type of RC flying, from training to aerobatics to special applications such as fun-fly events and even float-flying. This month's set of plans is for such a model.

Designed by Dale Singleton to accept .40- to .45-size glow engines, the 49-inch-wingspan Kandu builds up to a 5.25-pound flying weight. Its construction is straightforward and simple, with a sheet-balsa box fuselage and sheet-balsa tail surfaces. The constant-chord wing features a symmetrical airfoil and can be built flat on a bench. It doesn't get any more effortless!

Key features:

  • Designer: Dale Singleton
  • Engine: .40–.45-size glow
  • Wingspan: 49 inches
  • Typical flying weight: about 5.25 pounds
  • Construction: sheet-balsa box fuselage and sheet-balsa tail surfaces
  • Wing: constant-chord, symmetrical airfoil; built flat on the bench

In keeping with this issue's theme, consider fitting a Kandu with floats — it would be the perfect first floatplane project.

Plans for this model, which was the subject of a November 2001 Model Aviation construction article, are set 919 and are available from the AMA Plans Service for $14. See page 199 for ordering details.
