To keep with the design goals, only a small portion of the fuselage
is sheeted with 1/32 balsa. Formers and stringers are supported with
diagonal crossbraces for additional strength. No sheeting is required on
the wings.
Fred powered his 31-inchwingspan
Jungster with a brushed
GWS EPS-350C motor and an 8.4-
volt, 750 mAh NiMH battery, and it
hit his target weight of less than 1
pound. Substituting a brushless
motor and Li-Poly battery could
save an additional few ounces.
Fred noted that the aircraft was
capable of performing nice loops,
spins, and rudder rolls. Takeoffs and
landings were reported to be
nonissues, with the recommendation
to carry a bit of power on landing.
The Jungster was featured in a
construction article in the
September 2007 MA. Its AMA
Plans Service listing number is
1007, available for $19 plus
shipping and handling. See page
171 or go to www.modelaircraft
.org/plans.aspx for ordering
information. MA
THE JUNGSTER is loosely based on the Bücker Bü.131
Jungmann: a German two-seat aerobatic and training biplane. Fred
Ewing designed the model to be a lightweight, three-channel fun
flyer with simple construction.
