Der Fledermaus
Tired of flat, straight wings? This design will liven up those building and flying sessions.
Designer/Builder
Paul F. Denson dreamed about building a model with dihedral in the wingtips. He liked the configuration of the Jodel series and the Thorpe designs, but he didn't want a flat center section. Paul added a bit of dihedral to the wing center section and designed Der Fledermaus, which was featured in the May 1990 MA.
Paul's creation has a flat-bottom airfoil, which makes building an accurate wing a snap. The rest of the airplane is built mostly from stock sheet balsa.
Designed around .20- to .25-size engines and a four-channel radio, this 55-inch wingspan, low-wing design is stable enough to fly with only three channels if desired (no ailerons). This is yet another model that could easily be converted to electric power.
