Snapdragon

A not-so-serious design for serious fun-flying

Author/Designer: Kin Cartrette described his Snapdragon as "A no-frills airplane with all-frills performance..." We can't add much to that except to point out that this spartan design is still a viable first-build option years after its construction article was published in the May 1988 issue of MA.

The model has a wingspan of 45.5 inches and requires a .25–.30 glow engine and a four-channel radio system. It would make a great club building project, and the finished airplanes could be used in a fun-fly competition or in a club race series.

Specifications:

  • Wingspan: 45.5 inches
  • Power: .25–.30 glow engine (easily convertible to electric)
  • Radio: four-channel

The Snapdragon features easy sheet balsa and Sig Lite Ply construction, and it has a durable, simple-to-construct D-tube wing. Another idea is to use the Snapdragon as a starting point for a fun styling competition to see who can add the most interesting and original shapes to the basic design. There are many options for this model!

As are many designs available from the AMA Plans Service, this one is a cinch to convert to electric power. The Snapdragon is plans set 586, which sells for $14.
