Model aviation is about our members having fun!
As your President, I have set a course of action that has made great strides in protecting our rights to fly model aircraft, of all disciplines, for generations to come. In the past 18 months, through the efforts of many, we worked with Congress to have a special rule for model aircraft included in the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, signed by the President, protecting our member’s right to fly. We have developed key relationships in Congress and now have significant experience on Capitol Hill. We have developed close professional relationships within the FAA. As I write this in early July, I believe the FAA is very close to recognizing the AMA as the sole community based organization in the United States, which is the vital component of the law passed in February 2012. AMA also influenced privacy laws in thirty-seven states, with almost all having a positive outcome for AMA members. This is how I have worked to protect your right to fly, and have fun.
Going forward, local flying site assistance will be a primary focus of the Academy. Without flying sites, we will have no hobby to enjoy! This assistance can be verbal, financial, or legal. The current program of utilizing EPA landfills has proven a real benefit to many of our clubs. Additional avenues of support should be explored. Perhaps working with national service clubs would provide a benefit. We need to focus on educating the public about the benefits of model aviation, and how our members and clubs support our communities through educational outreach and charitable activities. This effort has to be in concert with our local AMA chartered clubs and members.
Competition was the premise on which the Academy was founded. I firmly disagree with ideas that might dissolve international (FAI) and national competition (NATS). At this time the Academy cannot become an isolationist within the world. More than thirty years of international experience allow me to influence FAI’s direction. The FAI is looking at our model for FPV and Autonomous Flight rules for Europe. Recent changes in Council funding and the success of funding by the Special Interest Groups has illustrated that programs can flourish without the need of additional monies. Fund raising assistance can be provided to those teams in need.
Benefits to the individual member can grow, without a dues increase. AMA insurance coverage for club officers and CDs is now primary for vicarious acts meaning that these members are now protected with first dollar coverage while acting within their capacity as an officer or CD. You can now research past issues of Model Aviation on our website. We are currently revising our Internet efforts, and looking at including District and Club needs as part of this. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Academy hosted your club website? This type of effort is very close to reality.
We take great pride in our current AMA educational program as it represents a professional step forward. We have expanded the programs so modelers of all ages can benefit from the various activities. Our educational trailers now allow us to take the education effort anywhere in the United States. The entire educational program deserves additional promotion.
The National Model Aviation Museum is the best in the world. Recently the FAI recognized it. More members should be able to enjoy the contents. To do this, a virtual museum hosted on the Internet must be created.
I have the experience, energy, time, and desire to continue as your leader. I ask for your vote to re-elect me as your AMA President.
DISTRICT I
Andy Argenio Smithfield, Rhode Island
The District I mission is to have aeromodeling recognized and respected as a worthwhile and enjoyable sport. The objectives include promoting aeromodeling and providing added value and services for AMA members and clubs.
In the past nine years we have introduced clubs to national and district incentive programs. These programs provide funds and recognition for club efforts that increase community awareness of our sport. District funds have sponsored 29 events bringing clubs and members together for what we believe the hobby is all about and that is friendship, flying and having fun.
I have spoken to public and private property managers on behalf of clubs to help acquire or prevent the loss of flying sites. I have engaged attorneys to assist clubs when noise and other issues threaten to stop flying activity. District funds have bought flight simulators and model construction materials for aeromodeling education programs.
During the flying season I am at events nearly every weekend. I frequently attend club meetings to answer AMA questions, provide advice, settle disputes, or present awards. I have created a District I Advocacy Network to combat the UAS legislation that would dramatically impair R/C model aircraft flying.
On a National level as a board member of the Executive Council I represent your interest with the AMA. I served on many committees and currently chair the Bylaw and Advanced Flight Systems Committees. AMA presidents have appointed me to lead efforts to identify opportunities and recommend solutions to strengthen and promote the mission, vision and viability of the AMA.
Campaign Statements
Larry Epifanio Orlando, Florida
I built my first model at the age of 5, starting with a solid wood kit. Then going to Comet sheet wood and stick models. At 7, I joined AMA and got my first U control model. I am now 67 and have had my same AMA # (10383), since I joined. I have flown everything from rubber band powered models, to Turbine Jets. I am presently President of a new club in the Orlando, Fl. area. I am a Contest Director, and an AMA Leader Member since the late 70's.
I seek this position so that I can contribute to advance the sport of model aviation. Model aviation has been a large influence in my life and my career. It has lead to a BSEE in electronic engineering and a competent machinist.
As District 5 Vice President, I will continue to work for strong communication between members, local clubs, special interest groups, and with the AMA, as well as work with government bodies on all issues that confront us as a modeling community. A positive working relationship must exist with local state and federal authorities to secure more available lands for modeling fields. I just recently negotiated a contract with Orange County, Fl to obtain a new 50 acre flying site in the Orlando Fl. area. This new site has enormous potential, as the site is part of 1400 acres that is environmentally protected.
AMA faces challenges in the near future which will impact modeling for a long time to come. I want to help us move through these sensitive times as we negotiate with the FAA and face new modeling opportunities with advancement in technology and creativity. If elected, I will work towards making progress on these obstacles and I will also place a strong focus on our members. While membership enrollment has changed, more attention is required in regards to recruiting and maintaining membership of all ages. AMA needs everyone's help in order for us to continue and enjoying the hobby we all love.
Richard Grim Harvest, Alabama
I am Richard Grim, AMA Life Member #122, Contest Director, AMA Leader Member, Large Model Aircraft Inspector and District 5 AVP, a resident of Harvest, AL (near Huntsville). I am a retired U.S. Navy E-9 with 22 years of service, a graduate with honors of the Sr. Enlisted Academy and recently retired from a 20 year career in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) industry.
I am a member of both my local Flying Clubs and my wife and son are AMA members. My Father was a modeler when I was born and remained so his entire life. My modeling interests run the full gambit—free flight, control-line, RC, fixed and rotary wing, all power systems from turbines to micro electrics. I believe all venues can peacefully coexist and we are truly all of similar minds and interests as we navigate the advancements in technology and creativity.
Twenty years as a UAV pilot and full scale aircraft owner have given me operational insight into FAA compliance and regulatory issues concerning the safe operation of aircraft. This experience will be invaluable as AMA and FAA continue integration of the National Airspace System. My Navy career and current role as AVP coupled with my service on the AMA Safety Committee have prepared me to represent District 5 membership as a member of the Executive Council.
I am committed to improvement and growth of AMA as well as the advancement of a safe, secure and enjoyable environment for all. In order to do this, I will maintain a strong volunteer base to promote District 5 and will remain available and visible to the membership to fairly and honestly represent you. This truly demanding job will be easier to accomplish as I have recently retired and am both willing and able to dedicate the time required.
