IN ADDITION to the last column, I found some more information about unconventional head shapes. Off-center shapes have been used sporadically with some success.
The original SuperTiger X-15 had the glow plug off-center by three millimeters.
Cyclon uses what it terms a Turbo Head with angled grooves in the squish band to swirl the mix as it's combusting.
Rhody Rhoam cuts a centered teardrop-shaped combustion chamber in his modified engines.
I finally received a head for testing in a Nova/Rossi .21 that looks very interesting. It's from Terry Keeley in Canada, and it is available from G&M Models in Broadview, Illinois.
This head has several grooves in it that direct and turbulate the flow in the combustion chamber. I tried to get a picture, but I had trouble with the contrast because of the black coating on the head, and I don't know how it will come out.
It's building time again, and some of the specialty suppliers who can provide you with the parts for your new models for this year are going to need lead time to get what you need made before you need them.
One of the problems with the cottage industry that makes Speed parts is that everything is custom-made. Nothing is stocked, so you need to get your orders in early.
Obviously I can't list everybody who is making parts, but the following will certainly help.
Bill Hughes is carrying the G&Z .049s and .061s as well as some other engine-related goodies. The G&Z .049 is the engine to have for 1/2A Speed.
Ned Morris makes bellcranks and monoline torque units, and he has ceramic bearings and wire available. The quality is excellent, and many Speed fliers use his stuff.
Bob Fogg and George Brown are making monoline handles, spinners, and other custom parts of excellent quality.
Barry Tippett is making the DARP Speed pans, and he reintroduced the ringer 15 pan last year. Barry also offers machining services.
John Newton has been busy in his Southern California shop and is making a .21 Sport Speed kit, fiberglass tops, graphite-covered horizontals and wings, and complete turnkey models.
John's many years of experience are providing quality parts and beautifully flying models. He retired from his "real" job several years ago and is busier now than before he was building competition aeromodels.
Mike Hazel, the maker of ZZ Prop in Salem, Oregon, has one of the widest assortments of propellers available for the Speed flier. He has many propellers designed specifically for each Speed class.
North American Speed Society (NASS) plans has many Speed-airplane plans as well as accessories for flying.
Chris Sackett is making his Lil Dynamite .21 Sport kit, and a number of them are out there flying. I hear that it is an excellent flying model.
"Jet Bill" Cajonola is making Jet heads and tailpipes, as is Bailey Machine Service.
Jerry Thomas has plans and parts for his Ironsides Jet models, which have held the Jet Speed record many times.
F2A (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale Speed) gear can be obtained from Meijltik Modellbau, Zalp, and Cyclon. Everything from plugs and propellers to turnkey airplanes are available—all at a price, of course, but they are very good prices.
